I looking at getting a Laptop.... only have budget up to £400......I have ruled it down to "Sony" / "Toshiba" / "Compaq" (have heard to stay away from Dell, Advent, Acer and another one that begins with an e!!) .... any advice would be very welcome:duffer:

To be honest mate, Dell used to be horrendous until a few years back and I wouldn't have touched them. Nowadays though, they aren't too bad at all. I use them for my business and Nissan (one of my clients) have switched over from HP's to Dell's now.

Out of the ones you mentioned I'd go for HP (if that's what you meant by Compaq), but I reckon you could do a lot worse than a Dell.

Dell aint too bad, and are easy to repair, never in my life am i fixing a hp laptop! (new motherboard install)

I can rebuild my laptop in about 10 mins. The hp one took around 5 hours. 6 layers later....

I used to use Dell but have moved onto the IBM thinkpads, they are bomb proof :)

Send it via the post, i can assure you they aint ;)

I have a Dell as my work laptop. It's not too bad. Needs upgrading badly though. My own laptop is a Compaq Presario V6000. When I bought it new a few years ago, I paid £700, but the prices have dropped very sharply and you can get them for peanuts now. Been a very good laptop. Well built and attractive.

I'll have a good look around this weekend ...... I'll look at Dell, HP, and "hello Tosh"

i can vouch for Toshiba last 2 lappies have been with them and only problem i had was 1 power pack blew up!!They shipped me a new one and was with me in 3days!!

For your budget you can get those Mini Notebooks which are only good for E-mails and Word which might be what your after and are great size for a Car Computer :D

Most sub £400 laptops will be celeron which are abit slower than the Core duo equivalent clock speed, all it depends what you want it for but I would try stretch a bit further and avoid celeron based ones.

Which HP was it laptop was it murt?

i have a packard bell easy note, its been ok for what i use it for, ive had it for about 3 years, i got it for just over £300 as they put the wrong price on it, it should have been over £600 i think lol
