I was wondering if anyone has either installed home CCTV or has looked into it.

I won't go into details but its become clear someone nearby has the knife in me and me pa and are resorting to damaging cars etc.... No idea why! We get along very well with our close neighbours and have done nothing to upset anyone, but alas someone wants to make trouble!

Therefore we need a CCTV system. We need something to cover outside our wall, and maybe three angles of our garden (pretty big).

Its all pretty confusing as i'm only just getting into it - so was hoping someone may be able to help as they have done something similar.

It needs to have fairly good quality pictures as we want to catch this tw@t! But we can't be paying out a fortune. We were thinking of about £400 - is that totally unrealistic?

Thanks in advance for any and all help :)

I bought a digital video recorder with a 320Gb drive and some Sony 1/3 cameras(infrared) for my parents house, all the hassle they were having has stopped so it was a good deterrent.

Just to add it was Croesco who gave me some good advice on what to get so it might be worth dropping him a PM.

The 4 channel DVR with HD was about £110 and 2 cameras at £60 each all from ebay.

(Camera's & hard drive bought new, DVR was second hand gives 40 days continuous recording then starts over again.)

90% of the time CCTV is useless, especially at night, unless you have state of the art equipment.

All it takes is for the perpetrator to be wearing a hat or hood, and the police and courts wont touch it. so all it gives you is a time and day that the event occurs.

the camera alone will deter even if its not connected, i would imagine 400 quid is more than enough to buy a really good system, mine only cost about a hundred quid and is infrered and 24 hours time lapse tape recorder (second hand) but if the person responsible is that determined they will just put there hood up and carry on. i would imagine it will stop as soon as the camera is put up, thats what happened at my house.

These are the cameras i got, good quality images day & night.

This is similar to the DVR i got but only paid about £70.

All well worth it my opinion and my dads less stressed lol.

correct thats why we are sneaky *******s and hide them in trees and couple them with pir's and opals with massive flood lights useless without all that, tbh mate id just use a fk off big flood light.....or.... a guy i know in the business has an old 911 with a 50 quid wireless 12v IR camera wired into the dash facing the 'perp' try and drive with your face covered......best thing is whilst its in range of the dvr it will record constantly however when you/the perp drives away the footage is safe at home!! and that will get you a guaranteed money shot for less than 250 quid.......

(runs off the 12v car battary), you'll find 99% of the liitle wireless cameras only require 12v

Firstly thanks all for the advice.

What does 1/3 mean?

And what is the picture like? Is it good enough to identify someone if they look at it momentarily?

TBH i live on a fairly quiet street so getting a face is'nt TOO important, as if i can get a good look at the clothes etc... there is a good chance i'll know who it is - and when i know that it does'nt matter if its good enough for a court or not ;) :D

1/3 is the size of lens on the camera 1/3 of an inch i think

Good image quality, my mum recognised me on it lol.

And is that good enough matey? Does it make a difference to the picture quality do you know?

Cheers.

during the day no problem, at night its a little bit more difficult, with infra red everything seems white (black clothes appear white), i always found you can identify people by there body shape and characteristics of how they walk/move, with face recognition i always find it quite difficult, unless you know who you are looking for, and like you say, dont think anybody put up cctv for the courts benifit, cos it never sticks.

If its someone from your street that your familiar with then you'll be able to pick them out no problem, as Kim says the night vision wouldn't hold up in court but thats not a problem when your judge, jury and executioner.

Just stay up hiding in the bush all night with a baseball bat :)

You've all been very helpful thanks peeps :D

As i said, i just need to know who is doing it - court evidence is not important ;) The way i am at the mo, he would'nt know what hit him!

Thanks Again,

Well you aint having it - its mine all mine :D

Unless you have something that maybe worth £400 to me

Cant remeber what kind of cctv we had at my house, think i upset a few people by standing up for myself and teaching some a lesson.lol.

anyways we had a CCTV the came with a motion sensor, it was conected to the TV. Any time it detected any movement outside, cars, people then it would cut off your tv channel and bring up your camera so you could see outside.

Would defo suggest this unless your in an incredibly busy street.lol. As i said can't remeber what the name of it was tho, but was a motion sensor.

Hello Issac,

Was thinking of getting CCTV myself so if you don't mind, can you let me know the rough cost and how you found the system?

Cheers
