what is it for?

behind the map reading lights,in the same inclousure,there is a small electrical fan.it comes on everytime ignition is turned on.it has started squeeling and is annoying the life out of me.anybody know its purpose? is it o.k to just disconnect it? thanks in advance for your help.

    Its for the Climate control, sucks the ambient air over a sensor for monitoring interior temp.
