What is the legals on tinting the font windows, I was always under the impression that a light tint or even at a push a dark smoke would be ok. I asked in a shop and they said that none would be legal.

70% VLT for side windows

75% VLT for windscreen on vehicles first used before April '85 and 70% VLT for those used after

VLT = Visual Light Transmission

Yeah that's right, the law change effectively makes any tint forward of the B pillar illegal.

As far as being stopped by the police goes, they would technically need a light meter to check them. However, I have seen many a chav by the side of the road peeling off their ridiculous 100% tints after being told to by the police.

At the end of the day if they think it's dangerous they will make you remove it. Does depend alot on the copper.

ive been in a car with dark tints on the side fronts and at night its really hard to see out..from a personal point of view i consider them lethal in respect of bikes or cars with just side lights on coming towards you:(

I have a tinted rear screen I hate it. Dark as hell and crap at night it's coming off if I can figure out how feckin 'orrible it is from a driving point of view

I got told by my tinter that if the front windows have any factory tint (as most cars do nowadays) you can not tint them at all.He also said that if he tinted them he could be fined something like £2000.He also said he would tint them but you didn't get it done here ;) LOL

EXACTLY. :bow: Some laws make proper sense Like seat belts and crash helmets. :)

As stated most cars are already tinted as standard. Some believe it or not nearly to the legal limit but most around the 10-15% mark, even fitting the lightest available tint makes most cars illegal.

As Znut says it does affect visibility, no problem through the day but once it starts to get dark its a different matter!

Ohh and the police dont need a meter, thats only there to confirm the actual light transmission. They only need to think your vision is being impaired through the front or front drop glass windows to take action.
