okay you lot, the new server is almost ready to go.

 

but, first of all, i want to run some ideas by you, and get a bit of feedback

 

1) All of the new forums will be empty to start with. I will import GENERAL, TECHNICAL and EVENTS into an archived section of the new board, which will be read only, when i have got some support feedback on the next part....

 

2) The only user accounts that will be created on the new board will be subscribed members. All others will have to register themselves again. The reason for this is because it is the quickest/easiest way to remove all of the old users, aliases, mistakes.

 

3) Have a think about the User Titles that you want. IE, junior member, member, etc., etc and how many posts before you change up..

 

the 200sx guys use flamespitter, flamethrower, unleaded user, etc...

 

the supra guys use newbie, member, advanced member, etc..

 

4) The rides section will be uneditable for a while until i add some hacks/features that are available, or i write them myself. All existing rides files will be carried over and linkable in the same place though.

I also have the mkivsupra.net BBS set so that after 600 posts they can put in their own member title which always leads to something funny.

 

I also created a 'stealth' skin for the BBS with all graphics, colours and borders removed so that people using it at work dont get noticed and dont get picked off by web admins seeing a massive bandwidth increase

i had a look at the stealth mode the other night, and also the user editable titles options, which will be enabled for members...

 

 

It might be suprising who has had foresight & who has been waiting to see what comes of the new "members" forum.

All who have done the deed, whenever & however is not a issue really, its where it will go in a year or so, & how we carry our members club in the future.

 

As for the member level status thing. This has to be a job for our site owners/administrators. Any of the ideas are ok, but they look after it so 'hey' its there call.

 

Also it might be an idea for the members forum to add a "could help map network", as most car clubs. Tools for use, Local b&b, or a tow etc. The AA & RAC Open the bonnet & say i'll call a truck syndrome. No good if its someone can help instantly!

 

 

Mrs T signed up on the 200 board this week and got an email through from Dave Refault(I think) offering club clothing etc. if you pay 15 squid a year.

 

She's gonna pay it. Needs to be more of an incentive I think to get more people to pay up on our site.

 

Would have thought TT Tim would be straight in with the clothing franchise for paying members.

 

Loadsa people were mad for clothing but nothing more came of it!

Not sure which software you are going to be using but if you are bandwidth limited by your host then make sure the 'display attached pictures' is turned off, then people have to click on them to get them up. Saves a whole bunch of bandwidth (I hit 15gb last month).

 

Something else I did recently was make the events page on the main bit of the web site point to a sticky thread in the events section on the BBS, that way I dont have to maintain 2 sets of events (3 if you include www.supras.co.uk/events ). Take a look at www.mkivsupra.net/events for an idea of what Im talking about.
