for all you non-tubbys

hello all,

im looking to get a non-tubby 300 for a daily driver & was just wondering what there like. do they have any common reliability problems, maybe higher milage ones etc... Iam going under the assumption that theres less in them to go wrong and the engine is not being worked as hard. I dont really know that much about the N/A internals, but i will not be wanting to modify it engine wise as i will be using it as a commuter. Does anyone know what MPG the n/a gets, im moping it might be better that the tubby??

Oh...and can someone please tell me the engine/car code for an NA is????? (the G32 thingy)

its good to see that you guys are keeoing these beasts on the roads, instead of buying a new (boring) skoda octavia or summat....anyway

cheers

I dont think getting a NA is the way to go for a daily driver. Virtually everything is the same cost to run. MPG is not that much better the only parts that would go on a Turbo and not on a NA is the turbos themselves. I dont think parts would be any cheaper either.

ahhh, yes but an NA is a lot cheaper to buy and maybe to insure?

No not really

The NA are not much cheaper if anything there are about the same. True Turbo ones vairy from £10,000 which is the very top to £5,000 but NA are between £7,000 and £4500.

A UK turbo will be about the same insurance as a NA. All NA are imports and insurance companies charge more for imports.

I got a quote for a NA becuase I thought it would be cheaper but found that a UK Turbo was the cheapest.

NO All N/A are imports,So A N/A is more expensive to insure than a UK TT,as Stue says wink.gif.

Nope.

Not really cheaper to buy and more EXPENSIFE to insure as they are all imports.

Get a twin turbo.

..hang on a minute lads... I got a great idea..

I have a NA targa top, I am new to fast cars and I thought this would be good place to start and i did not want all the troubles that alot of people have with turbos and the thrashing they get.

If you are not used to fast cars the NA seems more than fast enough when you put your foot down!!

But the NA or TT is not the car for long commuting as they drink petrol!

I like the NA targa top because it lets so much light in, i test drove some other cars like the mitsubish FTO and they are pretty dark inside giving it a claustrophobic feel..

And modding is a quick way to burn a whole in your pocket, credit card and wallet, both from buying new bits and reparing them all the time smile.gif

But the 300 is a great car!

Just my opinion...

I've got an NA SWB, and here's my two pennorth:

They *are* more expensive to insure than a UK TT, and consequently you can get them cheaper if you bide your time (mine cost me £2.5k and seems to have no major problems). But then the same rule is going to apply when *you* sell it on, I would think - people realise they might as well go for a TT, and you have to keep dropping your price...

As for fuel consumption - even the NAs are seriously thirsty in traffic - expect about 20mpg at best. Get it out on the motorway, though, and that improves to about 25mpg (best tank I've had gave me 30mpg, but that might have been because the speed sensor was messing up).

Oh, and parts? being imported, and being a SWB, parts are a bugger - usually they have to be imported, which takes ages (I'm presently waiting "up to 12 weeks" for a replacement quarterlight). Plus I've had trouble with even consumables, since the local dealer likes a chassis number to look things up with, but the system doesn't recognise imported cars.

And modding... good thing you don't plan to mod, because I hear that mods for NAs are relatively hard to find, and not cheap.

What engine/car code are you after? The engine type is VG30DE (as you'd expect), the chassis number is still Z32, check the FAQs to see how NA affects the model number.
