Help me car wont start

95 n/a man/ got fuel /turns over fine:hyper:

started and drove perfecly last night

before i start to check the plugs extra is there a common prob i could look at first

pull of one of the coilpacks, connect it to a spare/old spark plug (or remove a plug from engine if you do not have one) , rest it on plenum and try starting engine while somebody checks for spark.

If you have spark, then check at least one more on the others as well.

If you dont have spark then the most likely culprit is your PTU. Might be lucky and its just the connectors, take them off check for corrosion, clean if necessary.

If you do have spark then were looking at fuel of course, can you hear the pump prime, can you hear the injectors click..etc

Got a good spark and the connectors are nice and clean /could it be dirty fuel only had a fiver on me when i put some in and it was in a country garage out int he sticks!

I know it's a silly question but try putting in another £5 from a jerry can just to be sure you're not out of fuel. The gauges are occasionally wrong

Not really. Bad fuel could cause rough running , but not starting problems.

Can you hear the fuel pump make a noise from the rear of the car when you turn the ignition on ? (some are noisier than others though, but if its not something you normally hear you should still be able to hear it at the back of the car when somebody turns the ignition on)

Got no spark now, fuel getting to the pots ok, all the conecters seem clean ,and no dirt or corrosion on them

Hi , dealing with the issue you have now it would appear to have been a flooded engine originally but your efforts to correct this has caused more issue`s and this is so common due to bad connections etc a code check would help now, check here for how to do this

Scroll down to ecu codes

For the spark failure check the cas unit connections and ptu connections, in particular the lowest one which is often the most likely one to corrode and fail.

Assuming you get the spark sorted you need to do a flooded engine start as I have set out below.

Right a bad connection at the temps sender will cause not only a fault code but gives a corrupted signal to the ecu and the ecu fail safe it to run the injectors very rich, this can lead to an engine been very unhappy to idle ( uneven + erratic ) cuting out at junctions or non starting after flooding.

Best bet is to try a flooded engine start procedure but before this unplug the engine temp sensor first.

It is located at the front of the engine, behind the coolant fan and on top of the alloy pipe, in fact there are two sensors side by side, the one you want is the larger of the two on the left with the other been a single spade connection which is for the temp gauge on the dash cluster, you may well know all this but just in case you did not.

1)Ok now the sensor is clean and refitted with the ignition OFF remove the fuel pump fuse, this is located in the black fuse box along side the brake master cylinder and is marked up on the lid, it is a green fuse closest to the engine.

2)Now with the fuse removed turn the ignition on and depress the accelerator fully then crank the engine over for around 5 seconds, remember to keep the accelerator depressed through out.

2) Pause cranking for 5 seconds and then repeat, for 5 seconds pause again for 5 seconds and repeat once more, now turn off the igntion

3)With the ignition off replace the fuse, now turn on the ignition and WITHOUT any accelerator crank the engine and hopfully will start up.

If it didn`t start but almost did then start at no 1 again.

Try that and us know, will address any other issues once she is running again or it will get confusing.

Mine flooded yesterday, the batt went low and and whoever tried to start it let it turn over with a low batt so it soaked the sparks, i tried the fuse out method but it was too far gone. took out the plugs and they were seriously wet. dried them up replaced and it started but was really lumpy for a few seconds.

Cleaned the ptu/temp sencers and all the rest i could get to/ took all the plugs out wet ,

batt flat now/ so i will leave them out overnight, be back am to thank you all ,or ask for more help

should fire up easy in the morning once its all dry, just make sure batt is fully charged.

Well finaly got the car going ,pulled this that and the other apart, cleaned this that and the other and hey presto going /dont know the what the prob was /but one question when i pulled the fuel pump fuse ,the spark to the plug stops is this right thanks for all the help and advice and the ecu unit info from sussex stu,

one question when i pulled the fuel pump fuse ,the spark to the plug stops is this right

Yes the fuse also controls the coil pack trigger supply via the ecu.
