Strange Rumble at 2500rpm

Hi Guys:dance:

My 91 auto TT is driving absolutely perfectly except........

at speeds of over 65mph when the revs are at 2500rpm there is a rumble from what sounds like the rear of the car. If I raise the revs to 3000rpm it disappears, as it does when you drop to 2000rpm.

Around town and at low speeds it is perfect but if I stay at 70mph, either manually or in cruise control the car drives at 2500rpm hence the problem.

It is quite a worrying noise and will stay there continuously until the revs move 500rpm in either direction.

I hope someone can shed some light on this one:)

what happens if you have it in nutral or with clutch in at that speed does the noise go away or stay? if it stays then possibly a prop shaft noise or diff noise (usually prop centre bearing) could also be the gearbox mount sagging.

Thanks for the response guys. I will slip it into neutral next time I am out in it. If it is the propshaft bearing is it a big job?? How urgent would it be to do(i.e. is it dangerous)I will let a garage do it but just wondered what to expect.

Thanks again.
