check the drive shaft boot conditions, i know they can smell if motoring along and you have passengers in the rear.

Def check the driveshaft boots both near the wheels and the diff. Also the diff as it may be leaking, then it may be bye bye diff.

Or could be the rear shoes inside the discs, need to remove the caliper then the disc. One of mine moved and was catching the inside.

If all looks ok remember the exhausts run quite close to rear tyres and can heat them up I have standered exhausts and 18" alloys and I can somtimes smell rubber burning from rear tyres(when stoped) and put it down to hot exhausts heating the tyres slightley

could well be the disk as i did noice a slight rubbing noise just before the burning smell started.what would be the symptoms of the diff dying?

If its the diff, there will be a leak somewhere it will be visible, worth checking the levels and tighten up the gasket.

How far up does your handbrake go? if its right up, the shoes need adjusting, take off disc, and clean all moving parts with copper grease, get someone to work the handbrake as you look at it.

Put disc back on and there is an inspection hole with a rubber gromet, put this at 6 o'clock, at the very bottom, then with a flat blade screwdriver it can be adjusted upwards to expand shoes, downwards to loosen.
