chaps, following on from the pc storage thread i went for an external usb 1tb hdd

 

works great with my computer exept for when it come to powering up the pc

 

if the usb hdd is plugged in the computer will not boot up unless i unplug the usb hdd and allow it to boot up normally then plug in the hdd

 

any suggestions gents

 

i have looked at the bios and set the first boot to be my raid 1

 

 

any help much appreceated

It is because the PC recognises the hard drive as a possible bootable drive but the drive is not boot enabled. We have the same problem at work with people plugging in iPods into their PCs before they power them on (we do not allow the drivers on the PCs).

 

To date our techies have not found a way of stopping this and just advise not to have them connected until you get the windows screen.

Ah i see says the blind man :) i did go into the bios and only enabled the raid to be bootable also i dissabled the option of any other bootable option this is an intresting one, i really would like to find a way of leaving it plugged in if possible :hyper:

Certain bios/chipsets do it, even if you unselect "try booting from other devices"

un the bios set boot devices to cd/dvd and then your hard drive and then turn all the other boot opions off, that should cure it for you
