Boost with stock restrictors (not stock)

Ok, my current situation is that i have a mapped ecu, standard new tubs, forged rods and pistons and AVCR bc.

Problem is the stock boost restrictor (not the solenoid, the actual mig tip insdie the pipe) was taken out of the passenger side, but left in the drivers side.

What effect would this have when trying to reach 15psi or 1 bar boost?

Would the passenger side compensate? is it even a problem that its still in there? Can the pipe be accessed from under the carwithout removing any components?

you need to remove the other mig tip quick before it damages something. one turbo will be running more boost than the other.

Ok, can anyone say technically why its a bad thing? What damage could it do? Surely not enough boost would be produced, so would the other turbo be over boosting? i.e. over compensating?

Im just curious and trying to understand it from a technical point of view :)

The boost would always equalise with the balance pipe. All that could happen is that the one with the restrictor might try to work the hardest when on boost but the pressure would never get up to the levels with both turbos on the same conditions. So technically no bad or good thing.

When one turbo is seized the working one can never make enough boost for any positive pressure but that might be because it leaks past the vanes on the stuck turbo via the balance pipe.

There is not a "stock" restrictor mig tip only a stock boost solenoid which is designed to limit maximum boost when the engine is either cold or in safety boost situation (detonation) any mig tip fitted would be aftermarket.

The obvious result of having one tip fitted is it is not really compatible to use with a boost controller

Provided the boost contoller is set up correctly and is reading the amount of boost it should still be able to regulate it, all depends on how the contoller has been plumbed in with a mig tip too.

the mig tip left in would restrict airflow to the actuator, just pop it back out

Quite correct, exactly the same as what the boost controller is set to do but with an electronic valve.

The correct way to plumb in a boost controller is to link the two actuators together this way they are reatively balanced ( not exactly ) if connected this way and a mig tip in one side also then one actuator will be held closed longer than the other, the level of available boost before the actuator opening will be more from one turbo. A very common misconseption is one turbo will be boosting more, they are both still spinning at the same speed, just one is having a larger amount of the boost it is producing been diverted out the earlier opening wastegate.

You really should remove the mig tip and use the boost controller to operate both actuators equally, would be more controlled that way.

Ah, thats the stuff, thanks all.

Is it possible to remove the pipe with the tip in from underside of the car, i have some issues at the moment and im planning on sorting them all when i get hold of a jack?

Speed Sensor Knackered too.

Jeff, when are you open again, tried calling on the 23rd but you'd closed for xmas, in need of some part and possibly some advice too.

they are inside the pipes under the middle two intercooler pipes going to the throttle bodies and can be reached from under the bonnet without much of an issue. the driverside is a bit fiddly though because of the water pipes

ps. your having alot of trouble lately eh?

Halfords do trolly jacks for about £15

Yeah mate, lots of trouble later, 14k engine, still a pile of crap...

I will probably buy one, i live in an partment block, nowhere to store it and they weigh a tonne, hehe.

Ive tried getting to it from the engine bay drivers side, i couldnt manage it with my big hands, passenger was easy tho.

Runs like a bag on nails, wouldnt mind comparing it to another working Z tt, my rs turbo is faster, and that has no engine... (jokes) ^^

Mines running abit poop too so the comparisen whould be awfull, when i installed tips on mine a cut the hose further up and used vacuum hose instead because its easier to get the tips into.

Jeff, when are you open again, xmas, in need of some part and possibly some advice too.

Have mailed you.
