As title....... Just got off the phone after talking to Jeff (ZedWorld) for quite some time regarding what we can do about Eliza.

It's now looking like she'll be 'Trucked' down to ZedWorld (that's because she doesn't have an MOT, Tax or insurance at the moment), at which point she'll be examined as to the extent of the boost problem and, basically, we'll see from there as to how much it's going to cost etc. Then there is still the small matter of an MOT to be done before I can have her back on the road, hopefully for next summer, although she won't be looking as good as she used to, but that's down to the paint problem on the front end.

Jeff, if you get to see this, I really appreciate you phoning me this evening  as it's so much better to talk directly with someone who knows what they are talking about, and you've made me feel better about her again ;)

I am sure Jeff can have a look at the paint. IIRC, they use a good recommended bodyshop.

Be good to see you on here a little more Dave and hope you get the car sorted. :)

Thanks Si, it'll be nice to be back more regularly

It's been very depressing having to walk past Eliza every morning and getting in my little Rover, and just not being able to take her for a spin when i feel like it :(

Hopefully in the new year we can sort her out :)

Hope to see you out and about at the midland meets soon buddy and you know you're more than welcome with or without the zed :D

Good luck Dave, would be ashame to not have you around anymore if you decided to get rid of her.

Dave, did you get your wheels polished or are they chromed?

They were polished, by a company called pureklas.co.uk. I even paid an extra £100 for a 'Special' clear laqure to prevent any corrosion, but guess what? This special coating wasn't all that special, and defo wasn't worth the extra £100!!

I would like to have them chromed, if I ever have the money ;)

You very welcome Dave, it is easy to become disillusioned when you have not used your zed for a long time, and then to realise it may require work does often end in zeds been sold and then all tOo quickly the sale is regretted:cry:

Hopefully we can return your pride and joy back to its best and get some enjoyable use next year which is going to be a wicked hot Summer as I am going to order one from e-bay.... hot weather thats is....you supposed to be able to order anythying from there.:)

I was thinking of getting mine polished when I've got a few more important things out of the way. Do you mind saying how much it cost in total? I assume the process involved a general refurb before polishing? Would you recommend getting it done, or do they not last (with or with out the special coating!)?

Sorry lots of questions.

Phill

Don't ever bother with lacquier on bare alloy in the UK climate. You can protect bare alloy and keep in polished, but lacquering bare alloy is as bad as throwing salt all over them.

Lacquer won't bond to the alloy as it's not keyed or primed. Once you get a chip or a low-spot, moisture gets in and spider webs all over the place. Once that's happened, it's full refurb time. It doesn't take too long for that to happen.

If anyone's noticed, any of the Ford or VW factory alloys with diamond cut faces on them all start to corrode within a year.

Chroming is better and was an option on Z32s in the US. But over time, the chrome will still flake off.

Would it be best then to polish them and keep them protected (without lacquer) rather than chroming them, which will eventually flake off?

I do recall saying something along those lines some time ago, but now I'm getting older my memory is fading a bit, as I can't recall what the hell I was refering to now!!

Hi Phill

As Si has already stated, I wouldn't bother. Since they started to deteriate they really look crap! I cared for them properly from the start and now they need re-doing to make them look good.

The process took a couple of weeks to complete and did involve a lot of work, but to be honest they looked better without the laquer on altogether! As for the price, I can't remember, but I will have a look for the info tonight when I'm home.

I'll post a link to my original thread about these in a min when I find it.

Once Eliza is working properly again, I'll start to strip the laquer off and re-polish them myself (as the majority of the work is already done) and decide from there how to treat them.

Dave
