Hi, hoping that someone can help please. I am by no means an engineer or mechanic, I love my ZX but don't tinker with it.

Started up fine on Suinday, but just tried this afternoon (Friday) and all I get is what's best described as a "light mechanical clicking" sound when I try to turn the engine over.

All the ignitions lights are on as they should be.

Please, anyone any ideas ?

Thanks

do the lights on the dash dim when you try to start , do they go off for a split second or does everything stay the same and just goes "click" like the magnetic switch on the starter moter ...where does the "click" sound like it´s coming from ?

I would check your battery, mine doesthe same when standing for a while which is why I use a trickle charger when its left in the garage.

I would check your battery first like the guys have said. However my guess would be the solenoid on the starter rather than the battery based on the "clicking" sound

I had a similar issue on another vehicle (not a Zed) and that was the culprit.

Most likely a flat battery, see if the lights go dim while cranking the engine or check the voltage at the battery, should see about 12 volts.

defo flat battery and i guarentee the clicking is coming from the drivers footwell, from a small green relay (fuel pump relay)

Had this a few months back

Gawd it's nice enough to own a ZX, let alone be supported by a great bunch of people. Thanks again :)

All OK now, thanks everyone - it was the battery (thanks, Neil, for being so positive :) ). Blimey, the last time I actually tinkered with a car it had a dynamo and a side-valve engine
