Hi,

I'm planing to buy a 90-96 300zx, possibly a TT.

By now I'm just collecting all possible information about these cars. I've downloaded the workshop manual and found 300zx very close to Maserati biturbo (I own a 430 18v, I do all the work myself). I currently live in California, here Z32 are cheaper than in Europe so I think it's a good opportunity to try them.

I also own an MPI low boost turbo Mini 1000 (see you on turbominis.co.uk)

I know the us has high mileage cars but it just wouldn't be worth you buying a uk car, getting it shipped over then having to drive around in a right hand drive car when you drive on the right! I should be near you soon, as if all goes well i should be going to college in portland OR :) , if you need any information just ask :)

Here cars are cheaper than in Europe, even with a decent mileage.

I'm trying to figure out how the 300zx is an everyday driver. How easy/hard it is to repair (by myself), what are known serious problems. Then there are different versions like 2+0 or 2+2, the rear wheel steering system that seems to be an option. What's better for which usage.

I still have a lot to read on this forum.

My 300 is an everyday drive and the only thing that went wrong on it so far was the PTU, but i think all american cars have a series 2 PTU (power transistor unit (i think)) so there is nothing to worry about. There are loads of things that can go wrong on these cars but if your 300 is maintained correctly then there is nothing to worry about :) The hicas (rear wheel steering) can be disabled and taken out if you dont want it, its not too much work, a short wheel base (2 seater) are very nice cars, you can get them in various forms and you can chose from a NA engine or a TT engine. The 300 can be hard to work on if problems occur such as turbos, you have to take then engine out unless you got very small fingers and can manage to get the turbo out! The miles per gallon on 300zx are normally around the 18 mark.

Actually buying a NA Z is another question. I've never driven a Z but my experience is that (small engine) NA cars should be light and Z looks a bit heavy for 220hp. It's still not bad and NA are easier to find and cheaper.

I'd prefer the NA version to rev up to 8000 RPM to make at least 250hp.

you have to remember these are 80's sports cars, with a few small mods and making the car just a bit lighter you can east make 250BHP, just simple mods like exhaust, getting the ecu chipped, induction etc. And im sure that the standard internals will not take up to 8000RPM.
