knock sensor

hi guys

can i remove the plenum injector rail and inlet manifold to change my knock sensor or do i have to remove the engine?

also what does a knock sensor do?

Featured Replies

the knock sensor detects a certain sound (knocking sound) which occures during detonation inside the engine,

To my knowledge the knock sensor in a Z32 requires removal of the whole plenum and fuel rail and can be done with the engine in.

i belive some people reposition the sensor when it fails but the standard location is best to detect knocking.

Others simply bypass it with a resister. the problem being then there is no detection of det which will destroy your engine.

However if your engine is serviced reqularly and you use good fuel and dont go over boosting your engine should be fine anyway.

thanx for you help pete so basically it detects if you engine is fooked or not

in a way im looking forward to doing it as i can clean every thing up and have a better knowlage of the engine and what things do and where they go

and btw your car is looking good m8

sort of, it doesn't detect its condition as such as the sound of knocking only, sometimes faulty sensors can detect the wrong sound and fool your ecu to go into safety boost when all is fine, other times it can do quite the opposite and not detect a thing even with the engine buggered.

Just do a relocation to the top of the plenum, theres a handy thread somewhere on how and where to fit it. Obvioiusly the stock location is far better buts its better than F-all and much less head ache.
