Guys - starting to develop an issue getting car into reverse. Happens occassionally. It can be difficult to select reverse. Sometimes I have to put it into 5th when its stationary and then down to reverse, which always works.

I was watching "The Garage" one night and there was a similar problem on a Golf or something and it was put down to a bush on top of the gearbox which needed replacing. (Yes - I am trying to learn and the information provided on the garage suits my near total lack of knowledge ;) )

Has anybody experienced a similar problem and what was the remedy?

Cheers

Colm

Check gearbox oil level and condition. Would be a good time to replace it.

Hi Legrath - I was told by a Nissan mechanic that unless the gearbox oil was changed on the button at the required service intervals, changing it at a later stage can cause "whirling/noise". If this happens it can't be sorted with subsequent oil changes. Based on the 2k or so miles, I would do in it, he advised against it.

Does that make sense?

No worries mate - all use newbies can learn from each of our problems (unfortunately)

Sound like clutch drag, possible worse when the box oil is cold and slightly thicker, depends when it occurs the most. If it is worse when cold then as previously said clutch drag and reverse is always the hardest gear to select as no need for full cut syncro`s on reverse.

Start from basics, check the hydraulics, the clutch master cylinders tend to get overlooked and it can be a surprise to find it empty! Also check for any air in the system and full operation of the slave cylinder. Another item to check is the flex pipe at the slave cylinder, check the condition and make sure it is not ballooning when in use.

There is also the chance the clutch plate is worn and not fully clearing, but this is also directly connected to the clutch pedal adjustment inside of the car.

A final problem the manual gearbox can have is the reverse gear detent spring fractures and gets physically jammed, eventually if this is the case you cannot get reverse at all, but from your description this is unlikely.

Hi Jeff,

Come to think of it, when it happens occassionally, it normally happens at home, which suggests when it is cold.

I'll pull out the engine bay map from this site and start looking for the clutch master cylinder.

Thanks for the reply and pointers.

Colm
