Question for the auto boys..........

Ok Ok so somebody already put a post up about it but im asking the same question for a different reason.

At traffic lights etc when you are stationary under normal driving conditions should you put you car into neutral?

I only ask this because surely if the car is in drive and you are holding it back the autobox is under unecessary strain as well as possibly other parts on the car or does the transmission have a feature to compensate for this?

Look up the section on gearboxes and how they work - it will probably explain everything.

put mine in park or nuetral

There was an interesting comment on this in one of the BMW Owners' Club mags, I'll have to dig it out as I can't remember the details, but, it was something along the lines of putting the car in neutral at traffic lights etc, caused failure of a valve in the slush box, leading to expensive repairs, and it was better to leave it in drive!

Sorry to be 'vague news' I'll have a root about for the article.

If I only have to wait a short time (~tens of seconds) at light etc. then I leave mine in D otherwise if its going to be a long wait caused by a traffic jam or RTA then put it into N. The owners manual that comes with the car says to put the car in N for lengthy periods.

Would be very interesting if you could dig the article out tim!

Thanks for your help dudes!

I would NOT put it into Park - if someone decided to rear end you then there could be a very bad noise from the auto transmission! OK it will be the other persons fault but you will suffer Z withdrawal symptoms, and looking at recent posts this is not desirable.

Following advice from my previous post I leave it in drive - something about keepinf the box cooler. As far as strain is concerned the engine is ticking over - think of the strain under full power - it does not compare.

I never used to put my Soup into neutral even if I was stuck in Brum for a few hours crawling in heavy traffic. Just used to hold on the foot brake.

Since having my auto rebuilt though I have found myself doing this especially at Trax weekend when it was a long wait to get in and hot outside.

Sub, have you got an aftermarket autobox cooler on yours? If not matey I would get one asap after your box comes out rebuilt! wink.gif
