Yes the noise does increase with RPM, is there any way of telling without taking the engine/turbos out/apart? If the turbo has failed is it likely pieces have gone in back through the intake or will the damage be self contained?

I won't be doing it myself, bit over my level of mechanics! Well it also sounds as if there were a handful of 10p coins inside the engine, don't know if that changes anything? I'll try get a video of the noise when I'm next down the garage, just a bit hesitant on starting the car as it could potentially be causing more damage. I'll also try get a second opinion off someone who won't be making money out of the situation in order to remove any bias!

Recently I was driving along when I heard a grinding noise, I pulled over thinking it was the bumper half hanging off but quickly realised it was coming from the engine. Ended up getting it towed to a mechanics and he thinks it's something to do with the crankshaft/bearings. He's put it up on the ramp but thinks it will have to be an engine out job and due to this he has suggested getting a donor car and doing a straight swap. So I have a few questions for you guys: 1-Can the crank be removed without pulling the engine? 2-Where would be the best place to get a donor 300 or a replacement VG30? 3-Would it have to be a Manual-Manual engine swap or would a VG out of an automatic work? Oh really? I asked my local MOT center and was told it would pass the emissions test without a cat but would fail because of a new cat-presents check. Something about if the car came from factory with a cat it needed one for the MOT regardless of emissions.

How do you get around MOTs? Or is it just a case of swapping pipes once a year?
