300ZX, twin turbo, J spec 1991
http://i67.tinypic.com/ddymwp.jpg[/img]" http://i67.tinypic.com/2nav0a0.jpg[/img]"] http://i67.tinypic.com/ddymwp.jpg[/img]"]http:// http://i66.tinypic.com/2mnornn.jpg[/img]"]http:// http://i64.tinypic.com/2w2107s.jpg[/img]"] The second 300zx I’ve owned, bought at 55k, now at 103k, after 12 years Generally only run during the summer. currently SORN'd, once it is back on the road I probably will not be able to sell it! Details / work / things done Aftermarket turbo timer and fuzzy logic boost controller (Japanese ‘originals’) Japanese after market steering wheel Hid dipped beams, in Zedworld modified headlight bodies 25% over sized aluminium after market radiator Rebuilt manual gearbox 6 or 7 years ago Differential checked, backlash re-set at same time Replacement front and rear shock absorbers in the last 6 years Reconditioned a/c compressor 5 years ago – very effective a/c! New condenser, dryer and associated pipework 5 years ago Apexi inlet air filter Original spec UK wheels (wider ears) refurbed 5 or 6 years ago Replacement leather seats – minor marks Rear brake pipes (wheels to anti-lock controller etc) all replaced in the last 6 years Respray 4 years ago New plastic scuttle panels fitted at the same time Rear shock absorbers replaced 3 to 4 years ago Rear disc replaced 2 years ago Hicas bypass fitted Exhaust is stainless exhaust, from manifold all the way back, de-catted. Front ends of sills repaired Replacement fuel tank, fuel filler, tank straps Timing belt and water pump, tensioner replacement this year Toyo Proxis tyres good tread 99 spec rear lights (bought new so should last) Aftermarket reversing sensors fitted Supplied with the car but not fitted; Caliper relocation brackets to allow 350ZX discs to be fitted to the front Front turret strut Rear sill repair sections Generally only used during the summer, everything works apart from the clock! Some wear on the drivers bolster. The rear wheel arches will need some work. Hence my buying the rear sill repair sections I intended to sort that out this winter. But too many vehicles, too little time and a need to downsize really mean the Zed has to go. Largely standard but with a variety of sensible modifications it is a very practical car, I commute with it during the summer and rejoice in the beginning of the dual carriageway heading south from Aberdeen on the way home. Located just outside Stonehaven it can be viewed most weekends. If it does not gain any interest I'm not really worried, with a bit of sorting of the arches and rear sills this winter I'll have another year of howling motoring! However I really should sell - price now £3250, call Pete on 7853 240122

Refitting air con
I got my a/c working again after a period. the condenser is made of unobtainium, mine now has the unit from a combine harvester! The compressor can be reconditioned. All this got sorted out by a local specialist at around £900. Not cheap, but the car demists properly and is a please to drive in hot weather. you pays your money and makes your choices.

Driving with unplugged O2 sensors
I have just 'de-catted' my 300TT and fitted new O2 sensors. The aftermarket ones (OEM connections advertised) did n't have the right connectors! Bought propoer Nissan ones and the fuel economy has improved by about 3 mpg. The hot idle is much better (smoother).

refitting aircon
I've just had my ac fettled to get it working after a few years. The condenser and dryer arrangements are not really obtainable (tried MJP etc here). The US ones can apparently be made to fit but.... Anyhow a local AC magician sourced suitable parts (condenser from a combine harvester!) and made up the pipework to fit. The AC compressor was goosed so he sent that away to be repaired and new seals fitted. Thankfully all the internal temperature control flaps still worked so the end result was a system which can turn the interior into a fridge! The condenser sits in front of the radiator - so it is a little vulnerable. I have a larger aluminium radiator and so have no cooling worries. The car has been to France and run perfectly in 35 deg C so I doubt the condenser has a particularly negative effect.

cost of gearbox rebuild?
Mine cost around £1200 once I'd sourced the necessary bits for the overhauler via MJP

Waterless cooling system fluid
It is often used in light aircraft with Rotax engines. Got a bit of a mixed reputation. Unless you have a really good cooling system then you will see higher temps and need more pressure. So if like me you have a bigger radiator - but have not uprated the engine much it should be fine.

Diesel conversion
I think if you can afford the engineering to do it, yes there are engines that would fit. Performance would be pretty embarassing unless you used a recent engine such as the BMW 335 - but that engine by itself will cost more than a secondhand Zed! Then you would have to fit it..... Megger fiddling around. Even a straight forward diesel conversion tends to be about £2k by the time you sort everything out that buys quite a lot of petrol!

AC Help?
Thanks chaps - turns out it was a broken wire rather than a dirty connector - but the right place!

AC Help?
My zed is a '91 J-spec tt. Just about to leave the garage having got a new mot after being largely out of use over the winter. However the electric ac fan (for the evaporator) has decided to run continuously. Its likely I'll have to get it to a specialist - but before I do it there anytihng that typically causes this? Thanks

top speed of 300zx n/a 1992
The speedo information is partially incorrect. Legally a car speedo cannot under read at all, or over read by more than 10% - so the tolerances are -0%, +10% of the actual road speed. That is what leads to all speedos over reading - the amount of over read is usually quite modest - generally around 5%. So if you have a portable GPS and a straight section of road expect to see that level of over reading. This is also why fitted car GPS do not display speed..... (because it would contradict the speedo!). The usual tolerance for prosecution for speeding is greater than 10% - as that is comfortably into the 'illegal' area - but there have been successful prosecutions at much less as this 'speeding tolerance' is not written into law.....

Gearbox spares
The listing of bits and pieces looks like it is going to add up to about £475 plus the vat. This is synchros bearing and shift springs, no major internal parts, mainly as I opened it up whilst just slightly noisy rather than very noisy or baulking etc.

Gearbox spares
FWIW I have ended up with help from Mike Feeney from MJP who appears to be able to lay hands on most things!

Gearbox spares
My garage has got the gearbox in a few pieces(!!) to recondition it. The Nissan dealers are denying any knowledge of 300zx parts which presents a bit of a problem... Anyone got a sensible source of gearbox parts - preferably OEM but otherwise aftermarket would be fine. I've found Drivetrain.com in the US who seem to offer a full rebuild kit are there any others in the UK (or even the US)? Car is a '91 J spec TT 2+2 . Many thanks.
