  1. Very useful. In another forum I belong to there is a very good section called 'How To's" that contains exactly this type of info. The section isn't cluttered with questions about the particular mod, it's just the 'how to' information.
  2. Mine makes exactly the same type of noise that I posted recently http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=103837&page=1&pp=15 I haven't got around to stripping the plenum off yet, but although it's a very noisey clacking (like a bad diesel) and not a ticking noise, I'm convinced it's a stuck lifter - here's why. It's definitey coming from the top of the engine It's at a cam, rather than crank frequency There's loads of oil pressure I've looked at how these lifters work and if they are stuck, the (tappet) gap could be huge and this would cause more than an annoying tick It all started pretty quickly - one day it just went all clacketty-clacketty The noise doesn't go away when the engine is warm - it's there all the time I've tried lifter treatment (Wynns) and oil flush with no effect and also took the car for a hard thrash (if it's broken, it's broken) to try and free it off. Car still goes well with plenty of oil pressure and power. The noise has got slightly louder, but I figured the worst I could do was damage the cam. So my plan is to strip the plenum off, pull the cam covers and cams and get the lifters out and replace them - hopefully. If they look fine I'll pull the engine and do a rebuild. I hope I'm right cos I don't want to have to get the engine out unless I really need to.
  3. I've got to investigate/replace a clacking lifter, so the plenum etc is coming off at the weekend. If it turns out to be something more serious, can I get the heads off with the block still in the car? I've seen an article on the Oz 300zx site that does it with a non-turbo. Also, with the block still in the car can I get the sump off and the big ends undone and the pistons out? Basically looking for options without having to get the block out. BTW It's a 1994 TT UK manual
  4. I won't be driving it until I know the damage. The shame is I bought it off a friend who's had it from new with a full Nissan history and I know the car well and how it's been looked after. OK it's done 144K, but when things needed doing they were done. One of those things I guess. I'm not planning to give up on it cos it was one of the last 9 to be brought into the country by Nissan for UK sales. The plan is to restore it to it's former glory - it's just I hadn't figured on starting on it just yet!
  5. I'm pretty sure it's a top end noise. Plan is to strip the top end off this weekend and have a nose around before buying anything.
  6. I found this on youtube and it's exactly the noise mine is making Can anyone suggest a good supplier for all these parts Andy suggested?
  7. It definitely sounds like it's one valve noise, but I haven't isolated which side or position yet. I'll wait until it's light! If it is a lifter, some dumb questions. What's the approx cost each and where from? How much have I got to rip off to get to them? Anything else worth doing while it's apart? Is it worth changing them all (err.. depends how much the are I guess)
  8. It sits anwhere between 30-60 when driving and around 15-20 on tickover (about 1000rpm) It has to be said the oil pressure gauge seems a bit 'sticky' which I'd put down to the gauge or sender. It never drops below 30 psi when driving though.
  9. I've had the 300zx (UK TT) for a few weeks and it's been running fine until today. Driving it back from work it didn't seem to be down on power and was running fine, but while I was letting the engine run down on the drive I thought it sounded very tappety. Just had good listen and it's definitely in the top end at about camshaft frequency - I peered down the oil filler - and rises with engine revs. It sounds just like my diesel Passat now! I haven't given it a blast recently, in fact just a gentle drive to work and back each day. I had planned to do an oil service on it this weekend anyway, but is it easily fixable, expensive? Any thoughts?
  10. Just realized I posted this in the wrong section. Here goes again. My new 300zx has a cold start problem. It takes 2-3 longish cranks to get it started. I read on another thread that the fuel pump check valve may be the cause - fuel draining back into the fuel lines. I've tried priming the fuel lines trick (ignition on and off a few times before starting) and that seems to work. So the question is do I need to replace the pump and check valve or can I repair or just get a new check valve? I'm not sure if it's an integral unit.

  12. Well here it is. The immediate jobs to be done are: refinish the wheels -I don't think they've ever been cleaned tidy up the bodywork - some rust spots refinish all the black chrome - the wiper arms are a mess paint badly peeling off the rear flexible spoiler - can you get rigid ones the same shape? Paint doesn't seem to like these flexi things fix dent in drivers door - possibly just bolt a new one and paint replace fuel pump/check valve - takes 2-3 cranks to start, but I'm pretty sure it's a faulty check valve now new rear discs and pads - front have already been done full under bonnet cleanup - gain doesn't look like it's ever been done full service - change all fluids new oil pressure and temp gauges - the existing pressure gauge has a mind of it's own even though I know the pressure is good Plenty to keep me busy over the next few weeks. Given the bargain price I paid, I can afford to spend a bit on it. Can anyone suggest a supplier of good parts - service and spares? I'm in the Cambridge area, but mail order/online is fine. Just checking today and realized the car even has the original Nissan marked radio and CD player.

My new 300ZX has this problem and priming the fuel lines as you suggest seems to fix it. Can I just get a replacement check valve or do I need get a whole new pump? If so where's the best place to get parts - online or main dealer?
  14. Just bought my first 300ZX, joined the club and thought I'd say hello. It's a metallic blue 1994 manual TT UK model and I'm only the 3rd owner. I bought the car off a friend who had it for the last 10 years and know the car pretty well. A letter from the first owner even states it was one of the last batch of 9 UK models supplied by Nissan UK. Loads of small stuff to do to get it back to it's former glory, but that'll be the fun part. So apologies in advance for any dumb questions I ask on the forum. Dave
