I dont think there is a complete headgasket "how to" Dan.

Its a engine out job (there are guides for that)

then plenum off (guides out there for that, and I think you've done that)

lower plenum off with fuel rail

then Remove each head

Replace headgaskets

Really you should get the heads sent off to an engineers to be tested too.

^^^^^^^^^ Yes not worth all that effort and not having them skimmed. If the heads are not warped now they probaly will when you undo the bolts.

thanks legrath /jimmer so it cant be done with the engine still in? has to come out.

i tried to do the heads with it still in car dan, after nearly a weekend gave up, and took the engine out

Its a common misconception nowadays that if a head gasket fails the head should be skimmed, this is not so.In doing this (if its unnessary..) only thins the casting and in the event of a future serious overheating will likely result in the head cracking and be scrap, whereas if un skimmd would likely warp and be repairable with a light skim..

It usually needs a serious overheating to warp ie,driving the car for a period with it boiled.

Theres also issues on a turbo motor running a higher compression ratio if you dont fit a thicker gasket.(although raised comp is good on a n/a motor)

Check the head with a true straight edge,a proper engineers s/steel rule (theres straight and theres straight)or similar, and for about 25-30pounds for peace of mind get it pressure checked for any cracks if u like.

In the past 15-20 years doing customers headgaskets id say 30% actually needed skimming, that was a change from cast heads which cracked so easilly to todays alloy heads.

A common misconception yet regarded as the correct and proper way?? id rather have to explain the cost to many of my engine rebuild customers then apologise that i did it on the cheap and it went wrong.alloy heads can be a pain to clean up after removal so a light skim gives a good surface for the new gasket especially if steel multi layered ones are used which are far less forgiving than asbestos types.I really dont see how around 6 thou removed from a face is going to weaken it that much or cause compression issues unless your running very high boost pressure .

cant seem to find any visible probs with head gaskets, so having heads tested. WHY SO MANY BITS!:headvswal

Sometimes when cars are overheated the heads lift with the expansion and the gaskets stop sealing.Did the bolts feel a little looser than you expected?
