Looking for a mid-range laptop...is this any good?

The other half has got a birthday coming up and I know she'd love a laptop (mainly because she's been looking at them on t'interweb and pointedly leaving the sites up on the computer! lol! ;)).

The one she's got her eye on is one of the Samsung R510 range....mainly because it matches our TV (the whole red fade thing that the Samsung series 6 LCD TV's have)...I know, I know...don't ask...! ;)

What do people think of it? I know it comes in 3 flavours, the entry model that comes with Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 2.00GHz+2GB RAM+160GB storage, the mid-range model that comes with Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 2.00GHz+3GB RAM+320GB storage and the high end that comes with Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz+3GB RAM+320GB storage: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/search_results.php?sortby=&groupid=&search=Samsung+R510+Laptop

Also, are there any other laptops people would recommend? Anything up to £600 is do-able as I'll split the costs between me and my folks as a joint pressie!

Cheers,

Leigh.

Actually...am I being dense...is this laptop the same as the ones in the link I posted above?? http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0535283911.1222862211@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccciadeffgmhhdjcflgceggdhhmdfhm.0&page=Product&sku=937014&category_oid=-34014&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0

Only in the some photos on various sites they aren't always shown in that black/red finish that she's (for some reason) after!

Asus laptops are really good m8. Go into your local PC world. Around £500 for a good one.

agreed asus are a good make my m8 has one running vista perfectly

the specs ur looking at are good 2gb ram is fine for most tasks a 160 gb hard drive will suffice also unless u plan to download tv/shows/ movies etc core 2 duo is good quality processor (2 cpu's)

im running a core 2 duo 4gb ram 2.5tb hdd but that is on a desktop

Cheers guys. Unfortunately it looks like we're definately going Samsung now as she saw a couple of write ups for their new R610 model (with blu-ray disc-drive: http://www.dabs.com/Article.aspx?ArticleId=4966 at the bottom of the article) which is being released next month....I am going to be skint again. Arrrrgh....

Leigh, can I recommend this but upgrade it to 3 or 4Gb of RAM as vista wasn't really designed to be efficient on only 2Gb.

As for BR/HD drives I wouldn't bother yet, I'd just use a normal DVD drive and wait till BR/HD drives come down in price, the optical drives are easily replaced so that isn't an issue.

Review (This review is a different model number but essentially the same)

Dave! Really wanted to ask your advice chap but didn't want to take the p1ss as you've helped me SO much recently.

That one looks seriously good, thanks (the first page won't load for some reason). As you've recommended it I might have a bit more leverage to persuade Lucie that there are more options out there than just Samsung as I know she knows you know your onions (try saying that after a few pints... :D ;))

I am currently sat in front of the computer with my guitar on lap tabbing out Stronger, Faster, Fitter and Stay Forgotten for Anthony our new guitarist...and I'm bored out of my brain...would much rather be playing EVE right now! I'll get it downloaded and get myself on there if it kills me! lol :D ;)

don't know why the first link isn't working but the model number on tesco direct is dv9821 (Catalogue number 204-0103) at £480 and memory is cheap enough. The other advantage with that one is it has 2 backlights so is very bright in sunlight it also has a 17" screen.

I'm currently sat watching 'The long way down' on my new 27" monitor and browsing the forum on the 20"

lol! Glad you got it in the end mate...it's weird, when you upgrade your monitor size you start wondering how you coped for so long with a smaller screen! :D

BTW, I can FINALLY afford that Fireface 800 now...just shopping around for the best price...also going to order that second 20" to go dual screen on the studio set-up...can't wait to use the system how it's mean't to be used...I've been chomping at the bit chap I tells ya! :D
