celeron processor

1 gb ram/ 80gb hd

i say would be more than adequate for net surfing etc

but im not on the level of some people on here when it comes to laptops so am sure someone will suggest a make and model lol

pcworld do a range of refurb ones with 12mths warranty at a decent price. they are only available online though if thats any good. heres a link. stick to the packard bell, compaq or toshiba ones. the advent are ok but the letters on the keys ware off with heavy use, and stay well clear of the EI system ones.

My daughter wants the advent in pink:rolleyes:

Any idea what these refurb things are as there is no info on them, sounds silly to buy one when a new one will cost only £30 more

Im on an Advent laptop now from PC world. Cheap and relatively ok spec for a laptop.

Battery is useless though. Had it about 8 months and battery used to only last an hour when new but now it lasts less than 2 mins with power unplugged. Everything else been fine.

They're usually just shop returned and factory refurbished in plain boxes, sometimes they might have a few scratches but usually they're fine, and come with 12 months warranty too, the cheaper ones you generally save less, but the higher spec ones you can save 100-200 quid if not more.

Its still under warranty get it booked in and uplifted, it will be replaced if faulty. just phone the help line. usually away for a couple of days.

No key wear at all, and its get a lot of use. One of the keys is broken but that would be down to a over-enthusiastic 3 year old.

Get a low spec Dell, or one of those where you pay for the broadband and get a free laptop. Cost works out about the same overall, just means you only pay about £30 per month for broadband and laptop.

DO NOT BUY A REFURBED ONE!!!!!!!! What is her budget on what she wants to spend? Celeron chips are second rate go for a genuine dual core intel or AMD equivalent. Make sure it has a minimum of 2 GB of RAM otherwise it will be slower than cancer. I'd recommend spending between £400-500 that way your going to get something that is going to last and still run well. PC world are good to buy from as they offer a deal whereby if you pay £7.95 a month any problem hardware or software they will fix it for free. That way if you don't have someone who is tech savvy she will always get it sorted if she gets infested with spyware or a virus. In order of greatness the best laptops are Toshiba, Sony, Asus, HP, Acer, Dell. What ever you do DO NOT BUY A COMPAQ. I wouldn't piss on one if it was on fire they are awful machines.

Hope this helps m8 any probs send me a pm.

Nothing wrong with refurbs and they have the same warranty as a brand new one, they just can't be sold as new as they have been refurbed. Most laptops will get scratched anyways so why pay the extra 50 quid.

If its just for basic browsing and light office work and the odd older game nothing 3D intensive, then a £299-£399 will surfice, anymore is purely a waste of processor time and money unless you need to be encoding DVD's or video editing. Agree with the 2GB min for vista though.

i got the wife an advent & the lettering has worn off quite a few keys. its only 16mths old, but it gets used for hours on a daily basis.
