have you looked at ddr 3 based boards gonna be the way forward. asus do one which takes ddrs 2 and 3 so you have the option to get ddr3 as the price comes down. the quads are cool presuming the gainwards are ati's new offering I'm a converted nvidia man myself and wouldn't go back without good reason the new gtx280's are freekin awsome

yes they are the newest cards with the dual GPU configuration, but they keep everything on 1 pcb unlike nvidia did with the 9800GX2

DDR3 is a waste of money at the moment, it is only a few millseconds faster then the top of the range DDR2. Plus DDR2 is very cheap compared to DDR3............

i have always been an Nvidia fan but have been reading up on these new ATI cards and they are awsome, they are 2 cards on one slot that you could SLI giving 4gb og graphics but i have been told there is no need and SLI hasn't real taken off in games. i was going to have BFG NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 but was told the ATI is better

As always, the graphics card is only as good as the drivers that are written for it. ATI had a terrible reputation for drivers a few years back which is why i always stuck with NVIDIA. These days there's not a great deal to separate them.

With 8gb ram you'll need a 64-bit OS. Things may be different now, but 64-bit drivers were ropey at best a year ago when i last tried it.

This is why i bought an XBOX. hahaha

i have been running vista 64bit for about 6 months now, even though i have had it since release but i couldn't get on with it to start with until they sorted the thing out but its been fine since. i know about the driver situation Nvidia were the best, i'm not displeased with Nvidia just thinking of a change as this ATi card is VERY powerful

my oppinion is

its box-like in a box sort of way

it flashes lights wich means something important is happening and that nerdds stand in front of it humming, which is either a mantra or they will drewel very soon.

it has that flat pannel thing which lights up and shows either error messages, pop up or porn, normaly at teh same time I am led to beleive.

thats why i suggested looking at the asus board with ddr2 or ddr3 on the same board. as it progresses prices will come down and latencies will become tighter . The board in question is not that expensive and pretty clockable

take a look here asus p5kc http://www.custompc.co.uk/reviews/125932/asus-p5kc.html it's also got crossfire support too

i have read that someone has had 3.8ghz out of the Q9550 and i dont think thats the most, intel are back on top ATM

stewiedoom1.gif

thats mental speeds they are not that much more than the q6600 bout 70squid as I remember. If they get to those figure thats a good choice dude have to have a read up on those q9550's they sound nice I feel an upgrade coming on as for heatsinks if you aint water cooling I have and can recommend the xigmatec1283 its huge but clears the large passive cooling on the striker boards and is rated the second best air cooler and £14+p&p new on the bay of E http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360058490685 also quad suck a lot of power. had a 650w had to spend a £120 on a pcpower 750w to get rid of the nvidia low power warning. Quads take much more juice than the twins

good board, personally i have had issues with asus boards in the past, but that was because the board was low end, i think i went through 5 of there boards total, this was a while back though.

Right now im enjoying Nvidia GPU's and Intels processors.
