Its all about getting in more cold air Jay mate.

 

The standard Nissan air filters are panel filters in the stock air box:

They do the job but as they are surrounded by the stock airbox they dont get as much air as a Cone type filter would(cos the cone type just has the wire mesh then foam for filtration like this pic.

The location of the air filter also plays a big part in this.

If your air filter is in the engine bay then its gonna suck in some of the hot air from it surroundings.

 

Have a look at the GTR Skyline, or on the MKIV Supra, as they have to remove a headlight or relocate the air filter nearer the front bumper just to get cold air in!!

 

The stock location on the Z31 and Z32 300ZX is right near the front, so is in a great location already. icon14.gif

But as its near the front(and quite low) this can lead to sucking in water - which aint a good thing! But so long as you dont drive through 2ft deep puddles you should be ok!
