My laptop is struggling with the net and it is about three years old now, should I do the right thing and put it down or try to give it some TLC and revive it?

it probably needs to be formated and reinstall windows, a three year old laptop should still be ok for the net

You cannot just upgrade laptops.. First you need to see if it can have upgrades!! I know alot of laptops for example only have 1 memory slot for upgrades, and you cannot really upgrade the processor, gpu etc etc... you get my drift, only thing i would say is to check to see how much you can upgrade your RAM (Memory) by looking on manufacturers website or manual. Also do what dipone said, give it a format, reinstall the operating system. (Windows xp, not crappy vista) :)

I'd agree, unless your trying to run the newest games it should be just fine

Depends if you format just windows, but yes you will lose everything. Back it up first onto a pc hardrive with a IDE 2.5 -3.5 Laptop Hard Drive Drive Convertor Adapter, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IDE-2-5-3-5-Laptop-Hard-Drive-Drive-Convertor-Adapter_W0QQitemZ300224161406QQihZ020QQcategoryZ41994QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247 this what i did to save most my important stuff.

You might get away with removing some of the junk you don't need first. Go through the software uninstall (control panel/add or remove programs) and get rid of anything you no longer use.

Secondly, you can speed up the graphics side by the advanced settings. (My computer, right click - Properties, Advanced tab, Performance settings and select "Adjust for best performance")
