Brakes - or lack of

After nipping out in the Zed at lunchtime, I thought about upgrading the stock brakes - currently running standard discs and EBC greenstuff pads.

The only kit I can find is the Tarox 330mm one for £1395ish - are there any other kits around that aren't quite as expensive?

Any recommendations/help?

look in the for sale forum, some1 is selling skyline brakes for 500. Dunno if you will have to buy discs and pads on top of that though I would have thought so.

Andy,

Stay away from Tarox as they warp a little too easy. How much are you looking to spend?

Andy - keep an eye on the for sale section at www.gtr.co.uk - try getting hold of some R33 or R34 (they are the same) brakes.

Should be around £500 and one of the best upgrades you can do to a zed.

Is there really any difference in changing for new calipers if you arent spacing them out and putting on bigger discs. As the 'clamp force' - whilst will increase braking, wont be so noticable when compared to increasing the 'lever arm' of the caliper. (especially when coupled with better calipers smile.gif

you should see better braking from mounting the standard caliper further out and putting bigger discs on. Bigger diameter discs will aid cooling saving the fluid from boiling, also if poissible mount wider discs, (not sure what the zx uses), this will also help the cooling. But just putting skyline calipers will be rather useless, you'll need someone to design bells and brackets to mount the calipers and discs - around 350 quid all made up. Then some good discs and pads etc.

With regards brake fade - Castrol SRF fluid is THE BEST available, although it is 35£ per litre, doh!.

I even doubt whether youd see that much differnce with 'performance' discs and standard discs too. Have you replaced standard system with new everything and overhauled the calipers? From a quick view of the specs they shouldnt be bad brakes!

Oh, and tarox arent so good...although if you warp the discs they will skim them for free smile.gif

AND...

Just a quick thought...not slagging off skyline brakes...I know they are good before anyone starts...but why are they for sale? obviously the skyline owners have found something better wink.gif hehehe

But get some skyline calipers and huge discs and youll be laughing...but you are looking at £1000+ if you want a good big brake setup.

These came up not so long ago - £500 all in.

Sold now, but keep an eye on the for sale section.

I guess some folks sell Skyline brakes to get bigger ones, but I wouldn't be ashamed to have R33/34 'cast-offs' on my Zed wink.gif

Isnt there a lo cost conversion that uses standard calipers but the bigger front discs from a Mitsi 3000GTO? I think apart from the discs, all you need is the machined caliper step out mounts to move the caliper to the further out position. I've seen posts on this.

Willie

lack300 had this done, with some huge discs wink.gif. Id rather have some big 6 pot brembo calipers though smile.gif

AY, first of all - if there's no increase in lever force then why are the discs 330mm as opposed to 280mm stock??? wink.gif The discs ARE bigger - that's why you get such an improvement - and what an improvement it is!!! Most people who have had this done say it is THE BEST mod you can do to a Zed...

Keep an eye out for some s/h R33/34 calipers. You may struggle getting discs though. Ask around and someone may be able to supply...

So is which is best value for money?

a) R33 discs using standard calipers with step out mounts.

b) R34 discs using standard calipers with step out mounts.

c) AP Racing or another make of big brake kit with 6 pot calipers?

d) Another option?

R33 disks (330mm) with R33 calipers.... This is a direct bolt on fit.

Only way to go IMO wink.gif

Come on Andy,

Do your homework mate

280mm is stock for a Z32.

Only said I THOUGHT tongue.gif

Yes stock is only 280 on a zed BUT on 4WD the rear brakes can be used to better effect.... wink.gif So wasn't sure...

Everyone was saying use r33 calipers with no mention of bigger discs, as they will cost as much as the caliper, therefore i assumed they used the same discs - there no fukking increase in lever arm. I wasnt to know that the r33 caliper has some wierd lugs on or whatever it has that do not require mounting brackets making up. Cos thats not often heard of when mounting calipers from another model of car, they almost always have to have custom brackets made up. I am still struggling to see how the stock z32 can be 280 mm, yet the caliper from an r33 (with 330mm discs) bolts straight on. But i guess they do. Okie dokie, but you still need the discs which people negelcted to factor into the costs earlier in the thread.

I know brakes are probably the best mod you can do. To almost any car infact - and the only one to go for is AP racing biggrin.gif wink.gif

or the skyline ones (i guess wink.gif)

edit: and if you are gonna get the calipers, why not get some good quality discs - therefore requiring the bells manufacturing along with decent titanium (off round) bolts with heatlock on (ok the bolts only cost £1 each, but theres plenty of them needed wink.gif)

then as i said good brake fuid - srf the only way to go its £35 a litre, but have heard so many stories of even std systems being improved vastly (more so than putting on super mega groove discs) in feel and fade resistence.

Warmest Regards smile.gif
