me and my brother in laws are having a debate on increasing boost pressure, i did my zed and gtr as most people say e.g chip, boost controller and set up right. now one brother in law has a saab 93 turbo and one has a scooby WRX and both dont get why i spend money on chips and boost controllers and gauges etc cause all they do is buy a £10 manual controller off ebay cut it in to the turbo tubes and increase the boost to what ever they want and do nothing else. i need some reasons why i dont just use a manual controller

because your way is safe, and your not having fuel cut running over stock boost. Although i could be talking *****x (usually am)

just ask them if they know exactly what boost they are running ?. do they know the safe limits to what they will go to ? IE engine/turbos/injectors. have they got accurate boost guages fitted ?. all i can say is, its better to be safe than sorry.

they are asking for trouble then. you will be the one left laughing when theirs goes BANG. :D

stock boost gauges aren't that reliable. Look what happened to funky si when he was running unlimited boost with a stock gauge, it all looks fine then you have a melted piston and it's new engine time

ECU remaps do many things. Raise Rev limiter, remove speed limiter, adjust timing and fuelling for best performance and safety.

Sure you can just wack on a cheapo manual boost controller and turn up the boost. It wont be as fast as one thats been chipped and it certaintly wont be as safe. Greatly increased risk of detonation and increasing boost without a Boost gauge is foolish.

For the sake of £100 or so (on a Z32) it makes sense to get an ECU chip.

yep.

Your mad if you think you can just turn up the boost without changing the fueling youl have a lean mixture which will increase combustion temp, the possibility of det and if not straight away then quickly wear your rings.

Depends on the car too. My wifes citroen xantia Activa turbo has an ecu that cuts power if the boost goes over its safe limit of 1 bar, so in the case with her car i put a manual controller one and fiddled so i was able to open it the maximum before the ecu cut power. I did however uses a boost guage whilst setting it up then i removed it.

Yep, Many cars have a Fuel cut built into the ECU, which is another benefit of a remapped chip as it can remove the fuel cut.

You can 'just raise the boost' on a standard ECU, but it basically runs off the edge of the map pretty soon and you end up with default fuel/ignition parameters, which will almost certainly be wrong. You can run 12psi or so, but it is a bit of a gamble.
