my laptop is running dead slow now. takes ages to start up and really struggles to do a few things at once. it aint high spec but the performance has definitely gone down hill probably because of a couple of years a downloading different programs and it has never had a proper clean up.

I know a formatting it is a good way to clean it up but it cant be bothered with the hassle of saving all the files and programs i need esp now my DVD writer has kicked the bucket.

Is there something that can be done that acheives the same aims as reformatting but without the hassle or a way of reformatting without saving folders and programs elsewhere. Maybe im looking for a clean up tool but im not too good with computers.

Go into Control Panel and use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall as much as you can.

It's probably got loads of junk you never use.

Once you've done that, depending what version of Windows you are using there are various clean up tools in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

Disk Cleanup will get rid of temporary files and other stuff and then finally run Disk Defragmenter to re-organise the drive and speed it up a bit.

After that it probably needs a full wipe and re-install but by the time you've put all the stuff you use back on it may well end up the same.

Software has advanced a long way in it's requirements so it may just be time for a faster PC.

Hi, I dont know a lot about computers either however whenever mine slows down I run AD-AWARE SE because it roots out all the spyware thats being put on the computer, its not a definite answer, but if its suddenly gone slow that may be your answer, havent got the website but if you google it it will take you there, by the way its free.

Start up takes ages as it's probably starting loads of stuff you don't need.

When you start the PC, before running any apps..

Start..run..msconfig..goto startup tab.

Untick anything you don't wat to start up (windows will load up anything that is essential on a reboot).

Also check the services tab, sort by status and see what is running.

I think SE is the old version, the newer (and still freeware) is Ad-aware 2007.

i have a registry program that is crap hot , pm me so i can send you a copy you can use, include your email

i cant pm mate. can you send it to tp_ventham@msn.com

cheers

PS should it run your one instead of downloading XP medic?

run the one i am sending you , xp medic is a free one till you need to do more work, this one is a top notch purchase registry correction tool , this picked up over 1500 errors on mine where the others were only picking up 500 or so, it also has a startup manager built in that is much easier than msconfig to understand, this will only do so much though.

the email kept stripping the file out of the emails you sent me. I found the freeware version on the net but it only checked for the errors and didnt clean them but my computer had alot.

Is there another to get that program from you? does gmail or another email host not automatically strip out emailed files?

I think it will be the same situation for xp medic with the freeware version only spotting the error?
