any of you PC boffins hep me out.

I've been running 2gb of RAM on my MOBO ( ASUA A8V delux) with no probs .

all in the right slots etc.

I've just put another 2gb of the same RAM ie make , speed etc.

and now the MOBO still only shows 2gb

Even a BIOS update didn't fix it

The RAM is 4 x 1gb pc3200 400hz dual

I have a feeling that you are only supposed to have a max of 1GB per slot - you should have 4 slots.

Also, under a 32bit OS you will only see a max of 3 or 3.5GB. And as a further restriction I think each app can only use a max of 2GB.

A lot of mobo's seem to struggle with 4 gigs of ram. I had to up the voltages otherwise it just keep killing the sticks and I had tio send them back all the time.

But as sid, unless you got vista 64 it wont see the full 4gig.

I had to raise voltage also to get it running stable with 4 1gb banks as default voltage was different to the printed voltage on the sticks. It's be solid ever since at manufacturere voltage specs corsair xms2 pc6400 also an an asus board p5n32-e sli. Xp only sees 3.25gb on mine. vista would probably be a different story but i'd loose half my software etc.

What OS are you using? Some of them don't report the correct amount of RAM even when it's functioning correctly. Try a benchmarking util. with and without the extra RAM and compare the results.

have you tried just 3 banks of ram to see what that registers at? in different configs/banks

hmmm have you checked your board manual may only take 1gb modules to a max of 2gb failing that email asus they are pretty good on support they did to a live support thing at one point as I remember online

cheers chaps i'll check out the voltage, Andy i'm running 4 1gb sticks.

Yep, just clarifying the correct configuration. Have you tried the two new sticks on their own in slots 1 & 2 ? If that works then put one of the old ones in slot three and see if you get 3GB ?

Have you run a memory check in the BIOS ? Are there any configuration settings for memory in the BIOS on that Mobo ?

i've had a peep at your mobo manual pdf but can't see any reason why it wouldn't accept them. I could understand if it was locking up under stress etc but should recognise memory upto 4gb in 1gb modules only issue i can see couls be the 18 chip thing per module

my mobo is the same as yours Andy

Yeah, I know, but I seldom use that machine and have never really fiddled with it.

What sticks are they - make - name on all chips, any identification looking numbers?

On boot up - can you see what date your bios shows? Perhaps all you need is a flash update mate.

Quite common with athlon64 boards as well, altho still sort of current they are somewhat long in the tooth.

Edit either 64 or XP board :) sorry... heads up my arse tonight...

are all the sticks ECC or non ECC? - dont think thats been mentioned :)

if both pairs work on their own tried as 2x1gb pairs one at a time eliminates that issue he's running new bios above

the chips are made by WinChip, just strange it's fine with two strips , just it dosen't see four

Seems to be a few similar problems that people have reported, some have suggested reducing the memory clock speed from DDR400 to 333, apparently that is possible with certain BIOS versions. Some people also talk about increasing the memory voltage slightly.

The manual lists only certain manufacturers memory as being 'qualified' for use - suggests to me that it could be sensitive. However, all the ons in the list are 512Mb, presumably becuase the manual/mobo are a couple of years old.
