Hi,

Everyone with modified 300's do you find that your cars use allot of oil?

Reason why i ask is that it's been just over a month since i've had my car back, last night a really loud grinding noise come from the engine and grinded to a hault, checked my oil levels and it was almost empty, assuming this noise was because there is no oil. I know bloody huge deal, checked oil only few weeks ago.

Keeping in mind i've only had it back just over a month and i only drive it weekends and the odd occasion during the week does this sound right for amount oil it's burnt?

Featured Replies

cant see a car emptying itself of oil in a month being normal, they hold over 5 litres of the stuff

any leaks?

do you have any oil gauges? how were they the last time you took it out?

Sorry to hear this, you must be gutted

Loud grinding noise don't sound to good either!!

Have you started it again since you topped up the oil??

You getting any smoke at all?? would have thought it would be smokey as hell if your burning that much oil!!

I thought it was just over 3.5l.

But ouch that sounds like it could be expensive.

Seems excessive, I think I have read somewhere on here before about someone having increased oil consumption after a rebuild.

If it was burning oil it would smoke more. Forged pistons generally have a little more clearance than standard ones so there is the opportunity to blow a little past the rings but like I said, if it was that much it would smoke like hell. How many miles have you done ?

As far as i'm aware i don't think there are any leaks.

The Gauges don't work. The Aem should be setup so the oil light comes on still.

Thinking about it, i checked the oil when the engine was very hot, there is a possible chance i have more oil than i think and that may not be the problem.

What do you think?

Nope, pretty crap. Going through a really bad patch as well so this isn't what i need at the moment.

Tried starting it straight after it stalled and when i heard that noise again i've not started it since.

I've not touched it in any way so the oil has not been topped up, i don't want to risk voiding what warranty i may have if any.

Nope it's not that smokie.

It's not that smoky. I've done about 1000 miles may a lil more or less.

I really can't believe this has happened. I was hoping it's a engine failure so i may be covered in some way.

sorry to hear bud.

Thanks, pretty gutted as you could imagine, i'm still paying for all the work i've had done.

Dont touch anything, take it back to whoever built the engine. find out whats wrong, Let them sort it out.

If its an engine fault that should have not happened then they are liable if still under warranty so dont worry about it too much bud its only a bloody engine.

maybe you should get someone else besides the garage to have a little look to see exactly whats wrong, that way the other lot cannot bullshit you into thinking its not one of their doings.

Just to add to this,

I've given it some thought and when i checked the oil the engine was piping hot so the reading would be very low anyway also my oil light never come on. Maybe it's not a issue down to low oil i may just come to this conclusion as i was in a panic.

If it's not that then something must of broke/come apart within the engine, not sure if this is better or not as then i may have a leg to stand on when it comes to someone being liable.

However when an engine is running or just been running, all the oil is up in the head, and not in the sump. So it does give the impression of being lower than it actually is.

yes you must wait 10 mins for oil to settle back down again before reading the dipstick.

warranty?? posting up films of your rebuilt motor coughing flames out the exhaust may cause a problem with warranty and mentioning on a forum you ran it out of oil will go down well also

I wouldn't expect to have lost ALL my oil after 1000 miles on a newly built engine FFS. Give the guy a break! Something must have been omitted during the rebuild for this to have happened. My car has been running close to 400 fwhp on the original stock internals for donkeys' years which has also covered many miles. It has NEVER used that amount of oil or anywhere near it.

I can see both of your points of view, but we are talking after the occurance so lets hope it turns out well :)

You have to wait a lot more than 10 mins to get an accurate reading when the engine has been running.I once had a so called specialist fill mine up as they said the reading was low,the next morning when I checked it there was around 2 lt too much:rolleyes:

Jaffa sounds like you have a problem hope you get it sorted and just for the record my build had now done over 15k and It does not use any.

 oh dear, there is not much more than half a litre between the min and max dipstick reading. Somebody deserved a :slap: for that.

Have you seen any oil leaks ? Do you have aftermarket gauges for oil pressure/temp and water temp ? - if so what were there readings?

If you take the oil cap of and smell the oil does it smell burnt ?

I did a compression test on an overheated engine today that had zero compression on all 6 cylinders and all the coilpacks had melted inside the heads !

No more like:mac1::slap::mac1::mac1::xxx::rofl:

I took another reading last night and the reading was slightly higher than before, it was reading just under the min mark on the dipstick. So there is oil in there but apparently because the spec of the engine it needs to be on the max mark as it will pump all that oil around the engine.

Thanks Ian that's some re assurance, if yours is not using oil like mine and yours is a better spec then mine shouldn't be neither. The car is booked in for the 7th next month for the engine to be stripped and to find the problem as it may be something else and not down to oil. It's been said that my engine would burn allot of oil because of the spec but seeing as no one else Zeds don't then mine shouldn't neither. Maybe i have a leak or something.

Yeah i've only done that what i done in the video a couple times as i know how bad it is for the car.
