Need some advice on PS3's .... and I know fook all :mac1:

Was sent this via PM from RedZed (Harry's dad) and we're thinking on getting Harry a PS3 or a Laptop. He'll let me know which one Harry would prefer (he's being sneaky about it and trying to find out) but ref the PS3 John wrote...

Don't know if you,or anyone else knows much about the PS3 's but I was told not to get 40Gb version as you can't play ps1 & ps2 games on them.

Recommended was: The 60Gb Uk version as it also allows plays ps1 & ps2 games to be played ,more memory ,more usb ports, etc ,but not available in shops now (only available on Ebay).

Does anyone know anything about these? Is the 60gb one really that different (apart from the size!) when it comes to playing PS1 & PS2 games?

I'm the worlds worst when it comes to stuff like this

if there is a shop near you called game trader they will have 40 and 60 gig ps3 you can upgrade the 40gig from the net to play ps 1 and 2 games. some of the games you play on the ps 3 have to connect to the net to do an upgrade so you can play them. :nana2: hope this helps.

the 60gb was the original one and if you can get one then its much better

the 40gb is a cut down version hence its cheaper ie it wont play ps1 and 2 games and theres not card reader and a few other things

40gb - the one thats now being placed as the main ps3 cannot play PS2 games. not sure whether it can play ps1 or not. ive not heard of any upgrade to allow it to do so (play ps2) but if there is thats great. the 60gb one (the one i have) can play both ps1 and ps2.

the firmware of the ps3 is being upgraded about once a month or so - you can download them from the net either straight from your ps3 or through your PC onto a usb memory stick, but most latest games and the latest magazines will have the latest upgrade on the Blu-ray disc.

the 60gbs aren't being made any more so if you really want one then get one asap as theyll just get rarer and the price will just go up. the 40gb is still a fine machine and is reasonably-ish priced. hope this helps, lol

err cheers guys (you have successfully stumped me)

I'll pm RedZed with a link to here - hopefully it makes more sense to him :D

thanks again

40gb version they took the Emotion engine out (plays ps1 & 2 games). As the others said if you can get to shop called Gamestation or Game and see what they can do for a 60gb version if they have one as this is backwards compatible also but you may find it may be a used version as they discontinued them to make the 40gb cut down version and make more money.

AFAIK the 40Gb version WILL still play PS1 games as this is done in S/W, it wont play PS2 games however. TBH once you start playing PS3 games you wont want to play many of your old PS2 games LOL! I sold most of mine with my PS2 & got £95 back! I did keep GT4 as its the nuts until 5 comes out :D

apart from that the differences are minor - card slots for memory cards - just get a usb adapter, which is what i have to do on my 60gig one anyway as xd cards arnt supported LOL

stupid question but why would you want to play ps2 games on a ps3 surley you have a ps2 for when you had the ps2 games?

oh, BTW - has anyone seen the details on installing linux on the PS3 as a dual boot - looks the nuts!! complete home PC as well as a playstation!!

its not for me, its for Harry (Red Zed's son) we've raised probably in the region of £400 and by the sounds of things, if he had a choice he'd get a PS3 or a Laptop... so Redzed was asking me about the PS3's and tbh I know nothing :D

He's got a PS2 @ the moment.

think hed get more from a laptop ps3 are ok but only ok wouldnt say there the best thing since pre-slice malt loaf

get the ps3. it really is quite something. get a keyboard for it and it's a pretty good pc. yes linux does work. i have seen a couple up and running on it. does look very tasty. I just don't have the balls to do it as mine is a jap model. so I've got no real warranty. also i can't play the ps2 or ps 1 games. but after playing stuff like call of duty 4, warhawk and army of one....who cares. don't forget it's also a blueray player. it works out cheaper than buying one. he'll love it an i'm sure u'll have a little fun on it to lol. hope that helps

I've also got one and it's the nuts. Had a scan for 60GB models and the few that are available new are very expensive :(

theyre still within a reasonable price range on fleabay as long as you can find a good seller. i paid £395 6 months ago today in fact for a 60gb, 3 games, 3 blu-rays, extra controller and remote control. theyre still around that sort of price at the moment if youre quick.

i got mine on release date. was the first customer outside the store in hmv to get it at midnight. mine was my engagment present and i loe it oh so much. if you want one that play ps2 or ps1 and cant find the 60bg model then get the 80gb model as that also has emotion chip. installing linux will cancel your waranty if it needs to go back for repair but if you must do it then you can get it down quite easily and also upgrade the hard drive for any size you can afford. i got a psp with mine so i can turn on and view my ps3 anywhere in the world through the psp using remote play. .... cant play ps3 games through psp but can view all your ps3 vids, photos and ps1 games through the handheld. i quite often shove a ps2 disc in the ps3 drive and take my psp to my mates house. use his internet to connect and then play my ps2 game through the internet........ if you can afford to get the psp aswell then do it as it is a must!!!

Thanks for that mate, you obviously know your stuff,

all I really know is that the 60GB is the way to go or

failing that as you say an 80GB.May seek your advise

in the future if thats ok.

Cheers.

the 80gb can play ps1 and ps2 but in software mode instead of hardware mode like the 60gb. there was a 20gb version knocking about too but i think that's disappeared into the ether

TBh i would just go for the 40GB one, then at least with the money you have left over you can buy a few games. Then trade in the PS2 + Games and buy a few more PS3 games.

Once you have played on a PS3 he will not want anything to do with a PS2 ;)

as car mad has said. you wont use ps3 games much. i have all th sries of final fantasy (sad i know) so i need the backwards compatibility to play the ps1/2 discs. also if you get the psp the remote play would make good use of the emotion chip. any advice you want i will be glad to help. gaming and pc's are my thing.. although the older i get im starting to strugge to kp up to date with everything now. id say consoles im still good info for but im losing the touch with the pc's. ^^. i like me gadgets and tend to buy things even if i only use them once but the psp remote play is an awesome bit of software. i can view all my ps3 videos and pics and play games through the internet on my psp and get it to download from th ps store while im on holiday so tht it is ready and installed waiting for me when i get back. then i use the psp to turn the ps3 off/on depending on if im downloading or not ^^ also a must get if possible

sorry for mistyping. i got my third laptop this weekend and im having trouble with the buttons, need to press harder
