Size of bolts (does M8 mean 8mm diameter?)

About to move my concrete garage in the next few weeks and need to replace all the coach bolts. If a bolt is an M8 does this mean its pretty much an 8mm diameter?

    Yes, an M8 bolt would have an 8mm shank.

     

    But are they bolts or are they screws?

     

    Screws have a thread all the way along.
