Just looked at a ZXTT

Hello people. I'm new to the world of ZX's and would appreciate picking your brains about buying a car.

I've just been to see a 1992 ZXTT auto. I took it for a test drive and noticed that there was some vibration from the rear of the car under hard acceleration. This seems wrong to me, but I could understand that 280hp being transferred from the engine to the road could cause some vibration.

There was also a tappity sound from the engine at idle. Not loud, but definitely noticable with the bonnet up. The car also stalled at a junction for no apparent reason.

I certainly came away with less than positive vibes. I may be being paranoid, but I would expect a car like the ZX to be silky smooth, not a bit rough and ready.

If it's gonna cost you 50p then fine. Otherwise..... RUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!

Rear vibration is a common problem with these beasts,

from what I have been told can me gearbox mount, rear propshaft bearing, rear propshaft or dodgy wheel balencing.

Not sure about the stalling, did you really give it some during test drive? Mine has stalled like that once but I think i left it in gear when i stopped :O)

I let more techincally knowladgable people fill you in with the rest

50p for parts £800 for labour smile.gif

If the rest of the car is ok then may be worth getting it checked over by a local 300 owner. Vibration can be resolved but may require from £200 to £600 of work to do it. Tappety noise, has it been sat for a while unused? Did the noise go away after ticking over for a while? Stalling - same thing may just not have been run for a while.

Best advice I can give is that if its bad otherwise walk away! If the rest of the car is good, you like it and the price is right and you have spare money for erpairs £1000 or even better a warranty is included then get it checked over by someone off here that is local to you and the car. Where are you?

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys, it looks like my initial impression was right. I should be seeing another TT in the next couple of weeks so hopefully that will be less of a dog.

I have been considering going for a test drive in an MR2 turbo too, but that's probably fighting talk in these parts..

Stalling problems are usually fairly easy (and cheap) to resolve.

Vibration could be a different matter, would need to know in more detail, when, where, how much etc etc

Tapping noise - hmmmm would need to listen to that I think.

Find someone local who owns one to compare it, and yes you're right, a bog standard one should be silky smooth.

almost every z ive ever heard has a slight tapping noise on startup
