Now that i've moved, the zed is costing a fortune to run to and from work, so it will be a weekend car from now on. So been thinking of getting a diesel run about possibly a diesel turbo 306? Any other idea's? :)

my dad has a p reg toyota diesel estate, he gets about 80 miles to a tenner and its fookin quick for a non turbo 2 litre

but you are prob looking at something a little bit flasher lol

the 306 pugs suffer badly with the door looms cracking and breaking causing no windows, mirrors or locking/unlocking problems, plus the main loom that runs under the rad/front valance collects water and rots the wiring, which is not just limited to the 306 either, its a few models. other than that, they are not bad motors. i bought a 1997 406 1.9td as a runabout for £450. if id have had more time to look around then i would have got a nissan or toyota deisel.

Ive had renault laguna for 10k now, cost me £460 with 97k on the clock, i get about 36 to the gallon from it on my commute (about 40 each way) and its been good as gold. Thats a 2.0 Petrol.. dont be suckered by these old diesels they arnt as good as people think they are... The common rail ones now are fantastic but the older just normal direct injections tend to be very slow and not that good on diesel... Taking into account that its at least 4p a litre more and usually more frequent servicing required....

You'll get a much nicer petrol car for the same money as you would a poor diesel... Worth thinking about!

I have a 1999 Fiat Brava ELX diesel JTD 105 that I will be selling soon cheaply. only 75k miles electric windows, mirrors, sunroof, aircon, heated seats, remote central locking FSH blah blah blah has been genuinely reliable and nippy. Always returns 50MPG

How about BMW 325 td, have heard rumours it can run very well on vege oil!

Or xantias are meant to be very relaible and cheap!

How much is cheaply?

Get a 97ish 323f 1.5.... Not too gutless and does between 350 and 40 miles to 40 quid, got to keep it under 80 mind lol, I picked one up about 2 months ago for 150, shed loads of miles on the clock though, Probs pick a good one up for about 400

Thanks for replies, some food for thought there. Also had my eye on a 97 Audi A4 1.9TDi 145k miles and a 98 Passat 1.9 SE TDi 160k miles both around the 900 mark. Although her indoors does about 80 odd mile round trip a day and she recon it costing her about a tenner in her little 1.4 rover 200

i got a golf 1.8cl as a step between the zed and the next car

does about 380 miles to 40 quid atm, and very reliable,
