i've got to sell my z, i didn't realize how much worse on fuel it was going to be than my other jap turbo cars, i've only had her about 3 months and i'm gutted to be selling but the sad fact is i can't afford to run it let alone fix it if it went wrong. i love the noise and have considered an na swb but after the turbo i think it will just be a dissapointment. :(

tbh the fuel consumption isnt much better with a non turbo.

i think power to weight is the key, i've had mr2 turbos and 200sx's that are as or nearly as quick as the z, but they are not to bad on fuel if your on a run or driving sensibly. but the z just DRINKS fuel no matter how you drive it. if money was no object i would keep it, but its hard to enjoy a car when you've got one eye on the fuel guage and are perminately worried about "what if it goes wrong" i am GUTTED though, i've always wanted one :(

i really didnt think my zed was that bad on fuel, gutted for you

i live 5 miles from where i work and if i take it out at weekends as well i can easily do £75 in a week

Work out what your fuel consumption is (and mean accurately not *****x like 30 miles per £10). You may find out that something is wrong causing excessive consumption. You should expect 18mpg on a standard car driven sensibly. However, short journeys on cold mornings will give you somewhat less !

get a cheap runaround second car. My escort lgp was £200(to buy with 4month MOT) + £700 to insure a year.(omfg direct line you're having a giraffe) £12 week fuel @ nr 200miles and it saves you clocking up milage when you don't really enjoy driving to work(except friday's) my boss has a carrera s2 or whatever it is and a golf. I see the porsche once a month if that. It also allows you to really appreciate the z and give it your full attention when you're in it.

i do alot of short journeys and although i try and warm the car first it takes ages for the stat to open on these big engines, plus it runs a jap ecu and more boost, plus i've got a heavy foot! can't have everything i suppose

unfortuantley this is pretty common amongst new Zed owners..Cheap enough to buy , but expensive to maintain and run

Hi,

I used to use my old Z32 NA as a daily car, with a 45 mile daily commute. It did cost a fortune in petrol though!

My current Z32 NA is just a weekend car and costs hardly anything to run, apart from road tax and cheap Classic insurance.

Trouble is, I hardly use it !

Cheerz,

Jez.

i think you've hit the nail on the head mate, i want a car i can drive daily that still puts a smile on my face. i can't afford to have it sitting in the drive looking nice to take out on a sunday

My z was probably doing around 17-20 mpg, basic mods (chip, jets etc),

just couldn't afford it if anything went wrong, sad i know, but we dont all

have £2k sat around waiting to replace tubs or box. Got a supra n/a after that, was brilliant on fuel compared to the z ( have been in a tt supra, was worse on fuel than the z!!), but got bored with not having the 'kick' of

a/the turbo/s, so went for an mr2 turbo, reasonably modded, around 250-260 bhp, still very economical, all things considered. Can safely say that it's

on a par with, if not better on fuel than my 2.0 mondeo daily hack!

But, if money was no object, i'd be back in a z straight away, it's the

only car i've ever felt 'close' to, without trying to sound all weird! :)

why on gods green earth would you buy a car like this if fuel economy is even slighly in teh equasion. If you cant affor this then never purchase a car with more than a 2 liter lump. the thing is guys, compared to some other cars the zeds way better.

Fook me I put that in my van....Stop winging.... :D

Well after owning a Merc 300Ce 24 Valve, A Soarer Active V8 and a GTO Twin Turbo, I think the 300zx is quite frugal. The Merc being the worse. You could literally watch the gauge drop as you drove. I know a lot of the 4 litre V8 Soarer owners are making the move to lpg and those that have recommend it highly so who knows, maybe that is an option. Apparently costs about £1,500 but at £75 per week fuel, you'd save (by my reckoning) £1,950 per year (assuming that lpg is half the price of super unleaded). So that means:

Cost of conversion: £1,500

Cost of lpg fuel: £1,950

Previous cost of fuel: £3,900

Overall Saving: £450 (in first year, double in second)

PLUS reduced car tax and increase in car value retention.

Wow.... makes even more sense than I thought!

I manage, not sure how I just work my ass off and use my bonus for any zed maintenance

I don't spend that much on petrol and I use it everyday

I'm sad at the mo, as I think I have a puncture so left my zed at work and I had to get the bus home last night and this morning

So think I have a new stock wheel coming today.... Pete? Stuart?

Having ANY car, will give you probs, every now and then

I wouldn't have bought it if I was worried about fuel consumption

You HAVE to look after these cars... regular maintenance and replace outworn 15 year old parts that's why I get Duff to do it for me :D .... simple

Does make sense...but thats with a lot of mileage - £75 a week would work out at about 350 miles a week ? so 18,000 a year

If you did average mileage of 12000 miles a year then it would be a different story...let alone if you did average zed mileage of about 5000 a year

i've had an r5 turbo,rs turbo,2 quattro turbos,2 mr2 turbos,200sx turbo, gto turbo, but nothing has drunk fuel like this one. and thats not really my point. both my mr2 and my 200 were as quick up to a ton and i thrashed the nuts off of the mr2 daily for 2 years and it was 17 years old. and all it ever needed was a clutch! i need a car thats quick but bullet proof and much as i love my z, it just doesn't tick the boxes.

Are you sure there are no sensor problems, i.e dett sensor, if this is fooked then yes, maybe the car will feel 'slow' and use more fuel. My car was in saftey boost (you would get the same thing if the dett sensor was fooked) for 18 months, turned out to be it had a boost controller fitted then removed before I had it and they had not reconnected the stock wastegate solonoids. Reconnected them, chipped it and boost jets and FOOK ME what a monster (cheerZ Mr Dixon).

Must be something like that ??
