Just thought I would let you know.

I have always used scan for my pc bits and bobs, mainly because they are cheap but they have a good reputation for customer care.

I purchased a pair of Nvidia SLI 8800GT's from them on the recomendation from their tech department. They arrived and I spent the next 5 hours trying to get them to work, nothing. I thought Mmm maybe I need more power to run them, so off I trotted to PC world as I wasnt about to wait 2 days for one to be mailed and forked out another £100. Installed it.... nothing.

So I checked the cards individualy and yep neither wanted to know, so phoned up customer care, spend 40 minutes on hold and got told they are incompatable.

OK so I have to send them back, but I have to pay for it, if they where faulty they would pay for the return but I might not get a refund. So I asked hang on a minute, I bought these on good faith that they worked, they dont now your telling me I have to fork out another £30 on top of the £100 to get tehm back to you and you may not refund my money if you find they work?

Yes.

So basicaly if you have a problem with them and they can fix it all well and good. If they tell you a product will work and it doesnt your up to their whim if they refund and you have to fork out for the courier.

So if your thinking of buying from a PC comapny like scan (im sure teh others are worse) make sure you get proof these things work 1st or your going to be entering a money pit.

if they advised you to get them for you motherboard then they have to take them back as they sold you something that wasnt fit for the purpose you bought it

sory typo. they where 512MB XFX 8600GT 540Mhz PCI-E

had a big argument and told them they can talk to my solicitor. guy thought i was kidding, I wasnt, now they get his bill as well.

This is, and has always been, the problem when buying from massive online retailers like Scan. The price is great but, because the margins are slim, they make you pay for returns. As a PC retailer myself I understand why they do this. The vast majority of hardware returned to us as "faulty" is usually working and not installed correctly by the customer. I'm not saying this is case with your cards but you can see why they would be reluctant to pay for returns themselves. In the same way if you do return the cards, and they find that they work, they can only assume that you did not fit them correctly and return the cards to you with no refund.

If this is the case you need to prove they were not fit for purpose, which entitles you to a full refund, but don't delay as this could damage your claim if you did have to go to court...and lets hop you don't have to over something so trivial.

Scans terms and conditions are pretty clear and even if they have advised you that the cards will work, their T&C does make it your responsibility to ensure the cards are compatible before you purchase them. I have cut and paste some of the more relevant sections below.

Bottom line is, if you can find an article that says they are not compatible and you're nice to the guy on the phone, you'll probably get a refund and just have to pay for the postage. I don't think you can hope for a better outcome than that. If you ring up and play hell and say you'll get your solicitor involved, you're more likely to get mucked about IMO.

Good luck with it and as people have stated, I'd make sure you've tried everything before you send them back. update your BIOS, check the SLI selector board on your motherboard, make sure you have any motherboard aux power connectors wired up etc... you may have overlooked something... we've all been there :)

This is the email from scan which confirmed compatability

Chris nelson, The 8600 would be fine and is compatible with the asus motherboard, but for that price range we would recommend the newer 8800GT series of cards which can be found at the following link provide much better gaming performance, and due to them using the newer 65nm architecture as opposed to the 90nm they run cooler and faster. The cards can be seen at the following link ; http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.ASP?CatID=15&FilterCategories=512&Thumbnails=yes As for performance, these cards perform MUCH better than the expected within tests and the link below shows that they are on par with cards that are double the costs of the new 8800GT range ; http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/Nvidia_GeForce_8800_GT_Review/5369.html I hope this information helps. They did recomend the newer card, but it worked out £50 cheaper for not a lot more performance. Plus I got 1Gig of vid vs 250meg which counts a lot more in certain environments more than in a game so I went with them. They are going to refund, but christ I would not of gone near them in the first place if "Chris nelson, The 8600 would be fine and is compatible with the asus motherboard" this information read.

We are unsure of the compatibility.

This is not scans fault, its the manufacturers, why on earth have so many PCI-e versions, many of which dont work together.

The 8800GT should give you much better performance than the 8600GT/GTS/GTS Super, and is well worth the extra £50. In fact it will out perform some of the £200+ cards.

As for texture memory I wouldn't get too hung up on it. Half a gig with a couple of 8800GTs is more than adequate. Outside of gaming there are are few applications that will get anywhere near this requirement. There are no games at retail release today which use a gig of texture RAM.

If you are looking for an 8800gt wait a few weeks as the price has jumped up due to limited supply. They should drop back down another £30.

Glad you got your refund :)

gona spend the oney on the zed
