The armed guides that were carrying rifles, weren't to fend off wild animals but more likely to prevent them being kidnapped and killed by bandits!

I like the point he was trying to make...that you don't need a 4x4 to go to Tescos!...But then Clarkson drives a Ford Range Rover and Volvo soft roader as well doesn't he?
