Skimming the flywheel

Having a new clutch fitted next week and have booked into a zed capable garage. Thing is I suggested having the flywheel skimmed and he said not normally necessary.

Can you guys please tell me why this should be done (if it should) and the pros and cons of doing / not doing it.

Many thanks

Martin

Speed answer :

1. Get it skimmed prevents clutch judder and promotes smoother operatonion on new clutch by gettin rid of all all the shit left by the old one .

2. take your car elsewhere the guy is a dick !

This is of coursehow it should be done

Its worth doing so the new clutch can bed itself onto a clean surface.

God, why is it so fooking hard to find a decent garage? All I can say in their favour is they did Kris's and my cambelt change and also worked on Anders UK's car and a bloke a works pulsar.

Can't think of anywhere else to take it frown.gif

He did say they can take it somewhere to be skimmed if I so wish so I will get it done. Can you tell me roughly what the cost is and what measurement it should be done to.

Cheers

Mine was doen at Progress Engineering.

The guy who did mine was Dave, and to do the flywheel was like 30 squid or something? (i am probably wrong)

While my TURBO'S are Spooling V8'S are Drooling

Just changed clutch on mine did it misen took about 10 hours(2 days)didn't bother to have it skimmed(only skimmed 'em before if clutch judders)and no probs and thats 6000 miles of hard driving and still no bother!!! But if you are takeing flywheel off,CHANGE the rear crank seal because if you have to change it later MUCHO MONIES!!!!!!! for a fiver seal!!!!! wink.gif

The pro's are, it's a cheap upgrade, it does improve your acceleration and as Nico said above, the con's are, to lighten a stock cast wheel on any car has been known to grenade, rare in UK but in states some marshalls will not allow you to do sprints if you have done this, if done too much and it explodes under load, she can blow straight through gearbox and take yer legs out, that's why some places will not do it, if yer have the cash, go for a Jun or Fidanza chromoly lite weight flywheel around £400 mark, they are excactly half the weight and you will see definate improvements.

SE do exchange lightend wheels for most Nissan's, if they don't do the Zed, there must be a reason, ask em !!

Just about any machine shop would also be able to machine the required step (for TT's) into the flywheel and regrind the biting surface.

Standard step is 0.008 inches ("8 thou") - or 0.2mm. But you can put a bigger step in say upto .5mm for more biting force depending on the clutch, etc.

NA's have a flat surface.

Smith Meister was on about flywheels breaking free of their intended use and coming through the gearbox in spectacular stylee taking out the drivers legs!!! Gulp!!!

Hence the Douglas Barder reference. wink.gif

When I rebuilt my engine, I had to skim a considerable amount off my flywheel because it was knackered. It must have been slipping for previous owner and face was work-hardened.

After machining, my flywheel weighs in at 9kg, stock is 10kg.

Not sure if this affects engine much, as the engine wasn't running when I bought it.

I only use the brakes so I can accelerate all over again.

Talking of Douglas Bader - he was based @ Martlesham Heath airfield, upon which my house is built! Local pub is of course the 'Douglas Bader'!
