I,m a panelbeater working in a large bodyshop which has about 6 repair shops around the midlands , the notts branch are the main Mercedes repairer in the midlands . They,ve been advertising for more staff , spent around 6k on adverts so far , all we seem to get are dickheads applying :headvswal

They,ve come to conclusion that good high quality workers just aren,t around so they,ve ended up going on a recruitment drive to poland !!!!

They interviewed about 20 people and we now have 5 mercedes trained painters , panelbeaters and mechanics coming over in a few weeks to join us , only one speaks a bit of english though , but they have been putting new signs all over the garage in polish for the toilets , exits , canteen etc.

It,s a sad thing when you can,t find skilled people in your own country anymore :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal

BTW this isn,t a racial slur against the polish , i,m quite looking forward to see how these guys work !!!

Have you got any foriegn workers with you ?

its a shame there arent more British citizens willing to learn a trade and earn a respectable living. Thats the problem in this country, they should be made to go out and graft and learn a trade instead of being funded to do fook all by the very people that graft hard everyday.

I would sooner be around hard working, law abiding people from any nationality/ race, than idle, freeloading British citizens that feel it perfectly acceptable to take the pi55 out of me by doing naff all but sponge.

i would love to learn how to do this but to train its peanuts for quite a few years. !!!!

The other half works in a factory where they are starting more and more Polish, Lithiuanian etc, the Polish ones seem to be the more hard working apparently. Some of their backgrounds are amazing, engineering, accountants even one girl was a firefighter, and they are far better off coming over here and working for minimum wage.

Oh and lots of the girls are fooking gorgeous!

I started straight out of school , so the money was gonna be crap anyway :smash:

On the subject of money , i asked what the polish technicions make , around £400- £600 a month at a merc dealership

No wonder they want to come over here .

Do you do apprenticeships or take on trainees?

We were told this week they,re looking at taking on more trainees Steve , do you fancy being my bitch ? :D :D

sorry mate, you dont have the right hair for me!

I was thinking maybe if you advertised for an apprenticeship instead of a job, you would get lots of eager kids sign up. You could train them up to the standard you need.

Anyway - you cant afford me!

We have polish bus drivers where I work, they went out on the road with interpreters, and a sign saying 'please dont try and speak to the driver, he speaks no english'. Before that they had polish mechanics but none of them lasted.

There is a young lithuanian (i think) cleaner who says she is a lawyer but gets more money here cleaning the buses....I find that hard to believe, but then again I was told with regards the polish workers what they earn in a week in Glasgow is what they earn in a month in Poland......kinda sad.

Young people dont want to work nowadays, even less so in the motor trade and who can blame them, everything is getting more difficult to work on, with standard times cut, and more and more intrest from management on PROFIT only, not giving a flying fook for the workers so there is logic why people aint interested.

My 2p's worth.

Cheers John Crisp

There is a lot of truth in what you have been told John,

We have several Polish workers in our place, which is a Commercial vehicle and PSV repair shop. One guy, Hugo Slawdiski, a mechanic who stands over 6ft tall and built like a brick shite house is a genuinely great guy !

Great mech, speaks better English than some of the folks from Coatbridge, John will understand this, and is always there on time, polite, keen and and knows a spanner inside out !!

He is £3.80 an hour less than us and he is still better off here than in Poland !!

The guy who painted my Corvette and the new bumper for my Zed is also a Polish worker, and his standard of work is faultless. Have had a couple of chancers, but in our bonus shop, they soon get found out !

One of our panelbeaters is just back from Russia, went to see Celtic getting humped in Moscow on Tuesday night, and he says that the standard of living in Russia was very poor. Entrance to a nightclub/restaurant/poledancing/brothel nite club was £5.00 a head with a B52 cocktail costing £2.00 in a pint glass !!!! :duffer:

If you notice, Tesco has a small section of foodstuffs from Poland etc, all on its own.

If you never have worked out side the UK, you cant really comment I suppose

but I was working in France when my daughter was born, and speaking very little French, I know how hard it can be to settle in. Also worked for a spell in Spain, Germany and Holland, so been about a wee bit. I wonder if they looked at me, the same way some of us look at them ??

Alan...............

ex Scottish Bus Group (Midland) mechanic. long, long time ago though

I speak to a guy who runs one of the biggest vehicle insurance accident repair shops in the UK.

He reckons the east European panel beaters put a lot of the British ones to shame. Says they're used to re-using parts we'd just replace in this country.

No disrespect to any UK panel beaters - he might well be talking out of his arse.

Robert I have worked with First in Glasgow for just over a year....come on the buses.

Alan, there were quite a few mechanics/builders/electricians started in Glasgow a few years ago but there aint any there now, some were probably quite good workers but they were soon hounded out/left/moved on probably due to working practices at that time in First rather than them all being poor workers or chancers.

Cheers John

polish builders are second to none, they come here live in the house they are building or renovating and they work in shifts 24 hours a day, there work is faultles

A mate of mine made an awful lot off a Vehicle Insurance claims business. He has about 4 farms and 8 commercial vehicle businesses.

8 years ago he got one polish man who over the years have brought over about 15 from his village. plumbers, panel beaters, contruction, mechanics.. the lot.

Whenever I get them over to my place to do building, fence, bricking, plumbing work.. I pay them 50% more than him (he's a tight *******) and buy them pizza for lunch.. because the work ethic and quality of work is so good.

Granted they are hurting all the guys trying to get £200+ a day for interior, tiling, plumbing, bricking, paving, decorating work etc... but hands down.. the pols just seem to do a more honest job. :(

NOT TO PAINt WITH A WIDE-BRUSH. I'M SURE THAT THERE ARE SOME REAL CRAP POLS AND OTHER e euros ALSO. and there are also plenty EXCEPTIONAL BRITS...

the brits that are good are giving me qoutes that amount to £1.5K+ a week labour (hiding it behind inflated material costs and 5 hour work days) ....for good work though!! but that's just too much in my book for gardening, paving, bricking etc.

*** I doubt an NSX parked in front of my house is going to help on the next qoute I ask for, huh !!!! ;)

We have Polish cleaners at our place and its never been cleaner, and apart from the blokes who look like 70s porn stars they are all stunning and very polite and nice to talk to.

Much respect to them for makeing the effort to put the UK workers to shame.

spent around 6k on adverts so far , all we seem to get are dickheads applying :headvswal

Oi! Slaphead!,I came for a job last week! :wack:
