cam belt

Can anyone tell me what the 'official' time span is for changing a cam belt. I dont have the time to check the figures but I'm sure that it was every 3 yrs or xxxxxx miles. If it is 3 yrs then mines up for a new one.

I went to see my main dealer today and they said every 5 yrs?. They also quoted a price of ~£282 for the job, all inclusive. Does that sound like a fair price?, I thought so.

The zed also 'squeals' when it is cold, but ok when warm. Anyone have any ideas what that could be?. The dealer couldn't answer that one but said that it sounds like it is coming from behind that black plastic cover on the front of the engine. Could be a belt (hopefully!).

60,000 miles.

The price seems very cheap to me. That may just be the labour. I have been told its a 10 hour job. However that may just be the cost of ONLY the cam belt. You should also change the water pump, oil pump (I think) and all other belts around there, Air Con belt, powersteering, fan etc.

I think then you are looking at a cost of £500ish.

just to let you know, JeffTT at zedworld does cambelts from 200 all included, and with the 10% off promotion for work in July thats works out to 180, much better deal. But then andy duff reckons he can beat that by a long way.

60,000 miles, change water pump, fan belt, power steering belt, and two small hoses behind the water pump are a must,Find the oil pump in there and I will bare my arse in Burtons window for a week biggrin.gif.and the squeal is your fan belt on the OUTSIDE of the black cover, for god sake don't let them do the job if they did not know that eek.gifSE charge £250 all in wink.gif.

nissan charged me 220 inclusive, but screwed the job up and then paid me 3k to have my head gaskets replaced blah blah blah..go to a specialist if you can.

Thank you for your replies, the zed has only done ~25k miles since its last cam belt change 3yrs ago. I have only done 4k miles of that in the year that I have owned it (it doesn't see wet weather!).

The engine is as smooth a babies arse, no noises or anything (apart from the squeal) so do you think its worth waiting just a bit longer before I change it. I dont want to change it just for the sake of doing so?. Means the money saved can go on some go faster goodies!.

Tony

yeah no need after only 25k, give the fanbelt some attention though theres nothing more annoying than a squealing belt. You know what they say. if it aint broke then dont fix it

Yeah, but that's one rule that doesn't apply to cambelts !!!! biggrin.gif

well you kjnow what i mean, if it aint up to mileage then dont fix it

mine was done when i got it as i didnt want to leave it to chance since then ive done 20,000 but im still changing it now as im sure the heat soak in a 300 lessens the life of the belt and we all know what happens when mr belt snaps...mr duffman has done a few and i'd advise you use somebody who has done a few

Tooley m8 we still on for sat? Your bits are here m8 wink.gif

Tony, I would replace the belt to be honest - especially if you are condsidering upgrading the power wink.gif

If you want mail me on z32@btinternet.com and I'll give you a price breakdown wink.gif

Thanks for that....

Be nice if there was a Zed specialist down this way... It's such a hassel trying to get a day off work to travel up North to get the car nursed...

I can vouch for Andy Duff, he changed the belt, hoses, water pump, thermostat etc. all the bits from my Courtesy kit in fact.

10 hours my arse, closer to 5 wasn't it Duff?

If the belts 3 yrs old I'd be very tempted to change it, rubber dsegenerates and perishes over time. I guess it's £200 against £2000!

Tim

PS, Unlimited Coffee and nibbles at his old premisis, not too sure about his new unit biggrin.gif

I would also vouch for Duff. He really works nice and neatly.

It s worth the drive up there anyways, to meet that mad bunch of loony nothereners.

I went through the same delimma, wanting a specilist nearby who would do the work. In the end I took my car to JeffTT and dropped it off on a Sunday and then picked up late one evening. It was well worth the traveling to get her back with a new timing belt plus lots of other little issues fixed that only a specialist would pick up on.

Just got back from Jeff TT (for simple things not cambelt etc) but would be happy to go there again.

From the forum, would also be happy to go to Mr Duffman's if I could get a visa for that far north.

Bummer is that there isn't anyone down here this side of London (West near Heathrow). Except Leigh recommends Sovereign out towards Reading but not used him yet.

Still, Jeff does coffee and his dawg plays a mean game of football!
