anyone know about imports?

Anyone know what procedures u have to go thru if u purchase a car basically strait from japan, and pick it up from docks, what else has to be done?

buy the car, get the documents, get somebody to do something to it (we used wainrights), it will arrive, be checked by customs, when its cleared you collect the paperwork, go to the docks, show the compound the documens, they will give you the key, drive it to the shiping company, they do somethign else to the paperwork, you are then clear to drive it home (preferably with trade plates if you dont want trouble from the law), if its over 10 years old get a MOT, register it and your ready to go. If its under 10 years old then you have to pay 180 for an SVA test which is very strict, will make you go grey wink.gif, then you can register it (i think you need a MOT too).

sorry I couldnt be more specific, i didnt have much to do with the importing of ours.

The SVA is a real pain in the arse mad.gif

They check everything from the corners of your rear foglight(if they think they're not at the right angle, too sharp, it fails) to how much your sterio sticks out! confused.gif They check and measure EVERYTHING.

I know a car that failed because the nuts on the tow bar were not covered=dangerous. My point was... if you get hit by the back of that car, I'd get more injuries from the tow ball itself, not the nuts 4" behind it confused.gif

If you manage to pass the SVA then it's off to the MOT centre then your local DVLA office(post office can tell you which one) to get messed around by incompetant staff who know nothing about their job when it comes to registering imports. You need to take your SVA, MOT, import documents and your form(can't remember what number it was) that shows it has had all it's VAT and stuff paid.

Registration costs about £113, thats registration fee and 6 months Tax.

Hope this helps a little wink.gif
