Many moons ago i was taught if getting cramp take salt or more salt with dinner, always works for me ever since! I do know too much gives high blood pressure mind.

I always just use loads of salt for a few days and no more cramp.

I've suffered with cramp all of my adult life, so I sympathise. As for what's caused it, take your pick: too much salt in your diet, not enough salt, low electrolytes in your bllod, too much lactic acid/too much pyruvic acid in your muscles after they've been worked, sleeping in the same position for a long time etc etc.

During a cramp attack, I find the best thing to do is to try and fight against it and stretch the opposite (antagonist) muscle. In your case, if the calf cramp was trying to bend your foot downwards, then you need to try and force your foot upwards as much as possible (and vice versa) - get angry against it! Usually, you reach a point where the pain magically stops. Vigorous massage of the affected area often helps too. Gentle stretches afterwards tends to help too (in the same direction that you fought).

But, yeah, it's a bitch. And if anyone knows the antagonist set of muscles for the intercostals, PLEASE tell me - I get cramp there all the time (after doing archery).

thats what i did last night, it was pulling my foot down, i had to physically lift it up with my hands, it stopped, but as soon as i went to sleep it done it again, it fookin hurt

With the hot sticky weather you sweat more. This means you loose fluid and salt which causes the cramp. Had the same myself a couple of weeks ago. Got cramp in one calf at about 2 in the morning. Got cramp in the other calf about 4. Next door must think I'm a right stud cos I was screaming the house down.

Fluids and salt should help. The only problem is that stella won't help as a fluid as it dehydrates you and is also an inflamatory so will not help with any swelling.

As for the intercostal muscles there is a link here which may help.

Appears that they are a bit more complicated. Would suggest that if you are getting regular cramp in these that you see your doctor.

I have suffered with ILS. Irritable leg syndrome for many years and found out that is related to insomnia which I get because of my shifts. Its quite common on the railways. Its also been suggested that is why I may get cramp. Its your muscles doing their own thing while you sleep. I hope its a one off mate.

Hey,I get that,me leg(only one mind!) has a mind of it's own some nights, didn't know it was a 'condition'!

Most of the times its a lack of salt in the body. Bodybuilders have terrible cramps before competitions after strict dieting.

Thanks for the link :) I have seen my doctor and he says that although it's not pleasant, there's nothing much that can be done. I'm actually thinking about giving up archery now 'cos I haven't shot for most of this summer (because of all the rain) and the intercostal cramp has disappeared - they seem to be directly related in my case :(

Maybe its connected to your teeth grinding, if you been doing that coz your stressed and tense you might be tensing up in your sleep?

Is that the same as Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). There is a drug for that now ...
