Using a USB connection and windows xp, with a HP deskjet 3550!

That should tell you how to install it and you can download all drivers from the site to make sure you've got the most up to date one. Save it somewhere, unzip if zipped and the add printer and specify location of drivers

Have downloaded a driver it then asks me to connect the printer. I do so and it asks me to wait while it configures stuff, I wait for hours and it just freezes at that point!

Hi

Can you check if the USB port is wrking properly ?

I've disabled mine by accident before....

Then had to reintialise them

Let Me know

did you get the download for the manual ? Does that give installation instructions ?

Ana are you certain that the printer works.....

Sorry if these seem a bit basic questions but as I'm not with you it's a bit like working at arms length with a blindfold on.

Remember that with installing USB devices there is a certain sequence you have to things in. The manual should specify that

All the best and keep me posted

Tony

does the printer show in device manager?

You could try manually installing it.

If you download the smaller of the two files that are offered (the 8.7mb one) im assuming here that your 3550 is the inkjet and not the laserjet. and then run it, it will just extract some files to the download location (so make sure you know where you put it!)

Then go to control panel, and then printers and faxes and then on the left hand side click " add printer"

That will give you two options of local and network printer, choose local but untick "detect and install my printer automatically" it will then ask you to specify a port, choose "USB001". Click next it will then ask for a driver, click have disk and navigate to where the file you downloaded has extracted too. double click on "enu" then "drivers" then "win2k_xp" and it should then show you a file called "hpf3500k" select this and click open, then ok and then next a couple of times.

Thats the printer manuall installed. Those installers for printers are not normally particularly good, they often crash and generally cock up.

You could also make sure that windows is fully up to date. There was an update at one time that delt with issues of printers being incorrectly shown as ofline. Wether that might be somthing to do with it im not sure but being up to date cant (normally) hurt too much!

Thanks Quavey.....

Seems like you've had similar problems...

Hope you do get it fixed Topless

lol no i just used to work in IT support. Well i still do as sorts, but i now support very specific peices of software instead of "general windows problems"

:)
