They are the same dog mate, they were given the name alsatian in the wake of anti-german feeling after world war 1.

I always thought the same Allan. I was corrected only not so long ago. I always thought it was to do with the length of hair on their coats. But they are the same make/model! LOL :)

Same dog? they may look similiar (but are very different temperament ) and are from the same breed line but the Kennel Club recognise them as different dogs and Crufts have seperate show categories for them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_sheperd

The proper English name for the breed is German Shepherd Dog (a literal translation from the German Deutscher Schäferhund) but they are usually informally referred to as GSDs or as "German Shepherds". In addition, the sobriquet police dog is used in many countries where the GSD is the predominant or exclusive breed used by the police force.

The name Alsatian (from Alsace, an area of France bordering Germany) is also commonly used in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and the Commonwealth. After World War I, a few dogs were taken to Britain and the United States. In 1919, the English Kennel Club gave the breed a separate register, under the name Alsatian Shepherd. (Anti-German sentiment was still high in the wake of World War 1 (1914 - 1918) and in common with many other German-oriented names in the UK - including that of the Royal Family - the breed was renamed since it was feared that the German Shepherd Dog name could be an impediment.) Only in 1977 did the British Kennel Club authorize the breed to be known again as the German Shepherd Dog

Don't believe everything on wikapedia.....It's editable by all and sundry based on opinions...

I know...but it would have had more reference to 'different breeds' rather than breed lines if it was the case. From what it appears and what I've read on other links, Alsatians and German Shepherds are the same dog. There are different breed lines within that such as white german shepherd, long and short haired versions etc.

always thought they were different, certainly look different, german shepherds always look bigger and have bigger feet and heads, usually always lighter in color aswell

That's just a different breed line by the sounds of it. All under the alsatian/german shepherd title.?

Isn't the long haired version called a Belgian Shepherd?

Think there are short haired and long haired German Shepherds to make things confusing. I dunno, no idea on that one. lol

Our neighbour had a Belgian Sheperd. They look quite a bit different to German Sheperds. Longer coat, different colour and a much more pronounced nose. A bit like a collie.

When I got my German shepherd 3 years ago he came from a litter of 11 pups.............. there were 5 long hair and 6 short hair, they were all "german shepherd dogs". We wanted a long haired one, most of the short haired were taken .............. the "Kennel Club" dont recognise the long haired variety(or white ones) as the breed standard :xxx:

Beautiful dog mate. Amazing the size they grow into too...

This is too cute!

Sorry bud but they are 1 of the same, they have different classes of shows due to the English Kennel club's standard of the breed being larger and having a straighter back than the German Kennel Clubs standard of the breed, which is obviously smaller and is known as a Roach back due to its hind legs being shorter hench why it has a slight arch to its back. I know this due to my parents used to breed them.

There is also the Belgian Shepard which is very similar

Cheers Si, We went "just to have a look" at the puppies ..............and came back with "Monti" I told the wife he wasn't going to be too big

He was the first born.............. But he is a big softy..........But people who knock on the door see him foaming at the mouth barking at the window don't think that!!!!!!!!! They are VERY protective of the home.

I bet it was the wife's over riding desire anyway! You know what women are like with cute fluffy animals! I ran over a rabbit last week (unavoidable) and the girl I'm seeing at the mo, nearly ripped my head off!! LOL

Totally agree, another neighbour has one and they are scary from afar, but the thing just wants constant love and attention. He's called Max and he's feckin huge! Cool dog, though.

I have 3 GSD and they are one of the best dogs you could ever have :)

I couldn't agree more :)
