Hi guys,

I'm looking for some opinions on the pro's & con's of either fitting a JWT chipped ECU, or a Blitz chipped/re-mapped ECU?

It is for a stock UK manual TT, fitted with aftermarket exhaust, Blitz SUS induction, and an Apexi AVC-R boost controller.

I'm ideally looking for a plug & play chipped ECU, and nothing over the top aggresive wise.

Also, are there any for sale?

Thanks guys!!

JWT is a fairly mild setup. nice and safe.

Not seen the blitz before.

I'd highly recomend a chip from John Dixon instead.

Or get a DTA-Motorsport performance chip from us. Best of both worlds - excellent daily driveability, capable of running high boost yet maintaining safety maps for when things get out of hand (JWT do not have a safety map). £65 incl socket. +30 to get your ECU socketed and chip installed professionally. Postage is additional.

Sorry to thread hijack, but what sort of gains do you get out of the DTA chip?

And is it possible to fit it myself as im in Northern Ireland?

Power gains are very difficult to quantify as each car is different and will therefore produce different results. The DTA chip has been optimised to run on UK fuel, can safely handle up to 15psi (which is when the stock injectors max out) and has optimised mappings for low- and mid-range torque (ie the car becomes more "driveable"). I run one of our DTA chips and am very pleased with the increase in "grunt" as well as the apparent increase in MPG. I haven't dyno'd the car with a standard chip vs. our DTA chip but we do have a (customer) car running award winning 1/4 mile runs.

As for fitting it yourself - yes, this is possible although I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't got a socketed ECU. Contact an electronics repair shop local to you and ask them to (a) remove the stock chip and (b) solder in an eprom socket (supplied with the DTA chip). You can then insert our chip (or whatever other chip) into the socket as and when you please.

PS - if you car has specific modifications we can customise the chip for your particular setup.

so basically £95 then p&p ?

i'm interested in a chip and have been for a while, so i'm hoping you can help me.... ??

duno if the following in relevant but maybe u can decide whether your chip is suitable for my car? its a jspec tt auto and i've just got a greddy e01 boost controller, i'm thinking of decatting after reading many for and against arguements! looking for car to be more reponsive and would love the extra umph! few other mods on the way ... any suggestions are welcome, i have looked and searched what others have done, turbos seem fine, standard, car has done 90,000 kms... would consider replacing when a bit more cash! thinking of turbo intercooler... etc..

Hi there,

I'm sure we can help you with your chip requirements.

To answer your first question (total price), yes, £95 gets you a custom burned chip and your ECU professionally socketed. The only additional cost will be the shipping cost for the ECU to get from you to the place where it gets socketed and back. If you opt for say Royal Mail Special Delivery (insured to £500 value) then you're looking at around £7.87 each way (so roughly £16 return postage).

Secondly, suggested modifications include:

1. Boost controller (you've already got that)

2. A'PEXi induction Kit (£65 delivered from us)

3. Free flow cat-back exhaust (perhaps a Mongoose exhaust if you're looking to keep the car's appearance as close to stock as possible - again, we can source this for you)

4. De-cat pipes (you've read the pros and cons so I'll leave that decision to you)

If you perform the above modifications and run the car with our chip I guarantee you won't be disappointed! :) I've got all the above mods on my own TT, except I haven't decatted the car, and it's very fast.

I wouldn't bother with the turbos and intercoolers until you have decided you want to go for BIG bhp (400bhp +). The stock intercoolers and turbos will see you up to roughly 365-380 bhp provided everything is in top condition. Remember, if you're going to change the intercoolers and turbos you will not see any benefit until you fit larger injectors (NISMO 555's for example).

With regard to your final question (hard pipe kit), yes, I sell the complete kit (stainless steel hard pipes, silicone couplers and stainless steel bands). The silicone couplers are available in red, blue, black and yellow. Hard pipe kits are available for the four boost pipes as well as the radiator pipes (both upper and lower). Cost is £248 for the boost pipes and £148 for the radiator pipes (includes shipping).

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me or post it here on the forum.

All the best,

Dan

excellent - some good feedback there.. the chip is a 100% definate - but i have to wait until 26th (payday) i'll b in touch and the pipes i want - lets see wat the salary says hey ! with all the others bills... :P haha.. u mentioned a Free flow cat-back exhaust ? u got prices on this? what are the advantages? or shud i search? sorry! i can do the research but if u got answers plz educate me - any reponse is cool .. :)

That's great! Let me know what you want, when you can! LOL :)

With respect to the exhaust, any aftermarket exhaust is classed as a "free flow" exhaust because it replaces the "restricted" stock exhaust. Basically, it allows the exhaust gasses to exit the car more freely than with the stock system in place. Prices for cat-back exhausts vary widely and there are quite a few sources. For a decent system you should budget between £400 and £500 excluding fitting, a little less if you're buying second hand. I can source you a Mongoose cat-back system for around £490 delivered. This is generally considered a good system which isn't too loud and retains the stock look of the car (the exhaust tips can be had as either twin 3" or one 6"x4" oval).

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous PM is that you can also get free flowing down pipes. This will free up even more horses but is not strictly necessary if you're not chasing big bhp.

Dan

i have seen decat down pipes on ebay - is that a similar thing? im not an expert on exhausts at all.. but like i said - a bit more 'kick' would be nice. :)

Blitz acess ecu im told is a very good jap product but i think it has the same problems as the mines ecu as its mapped for high octane jap fuel 100 + ron .I think the jim wolf tec ecu is american and and mapped a bit safer for uk fuel.

Thanks for that info Taff, appreciated!!

i ran a JWT eprom for a year or so and it didnt give me any probs using super unleaded. with your setup mate it should be fine.

I have a Central 20 ecu which is very aggresive like the mines one, give good performance gains, but you do need to use v-power fuel only.

This is an urban myth mate they run fine on Optimax. I ran a mines (considered the most aggressive) for 2 years with incident and always sporting driving ;) I also have the Blitz ECU which again runs sweet on optimax

A major, major point that has been overlooked here guys is the engine set up before and after fitting any different ecu/ chip and increased boost.

It is without doubt that most the cars out there if not recently checked and set up properly with a diagnostic system will have "issues" ( check out the help and advice section for all the typical problems encounted every day)

These issues can include incorrect tick over settings, incorrect throttle balance, tps settings, ignition timing errors, boost/ air leaks and bad service levels in general.

The 300zx engine is very good at apparently running ok with any if not all of these problems especially to a new owner who does not know what his or her car should really run like when correctly set up in just standard form let alone a "tuned" state.

Fitting and running your car without the above and more checks been done can at worse lead to an underperformimg engine after been chipped to an engine in serious danger of going bang!

Always have the engine checked for mis-adjustments and service level BEFORE venturing down the increase boost / performance road, it make real sense to pay the extra to have it done correctly in the knowledge that your getting the best value for money and a safe set up.

Any company or individial who supply and fits upgraded eproms and increases boost levels WITHOUT doing all of these checks is playing Russian roulette with your engine!

Blitz and JWT are very, similar mappings as is John Dixon chips ( for standard injectors anyway) Central 20 chips are very similar to standard series II cars the most power for bucks in my experience is the Veilside ecu which has a very unique style of mapping and despite been designed for use with Jap spec fuel is very happy to run 14 psi in most cases ( timing set up important) on super unleaded and will give more power at similar rpm to other chips, hard to find though.
