there's no grinding noises or anything, just refuses to change up from 2'nd. Not a good sign I know. I've done the workshop manual ecu test and all 10 lights flash normal so im thinking it's a mechanical problem. Is there anything else i could check? grasping at straws I know.....

Yup sounds exactly the same as what happened to mine...... Mine was Fooked................

Shit.   Get autobox fixed (loads of money) ................. get manual convertion (loads and loads of money)....................break it(hassle and lose loads of money)...............sell it (who wants a z with a fooked autobox?).............

I guess its got to be worth disconecting battery and letting ecu reset... then start with easy (ish) stuff.. filter clean and fluid change ,, Have you looked at colour of fluid on dipstick ?

When you say it doesnt change up, what exactly happens? Mine is fine in 1st and 2nd then when 3rd is selected it slips but does speed up (eventually) until I let my foot off a bit and overdrive is engaged and it seems fine. Also I noticed when in 4th and I let my foot off the accelerator then back on I get like 'slack' being taken up. I reacon my box is cream crackered as i've dropped the sump and fitted a new strainer, the old one being clear and unblocked. Possible the box in mine has just worn oot a clutch.

With yours you say it stays in 2nd, does it go to 3rd and not drive or does it 'hold' 2nd?

It just "holds" second. That's the funny thing, i've had an autobox go on my last z and it made terrible grinding rattling noises when it was trying to engage third. This is completely different.

Oil is fine, but your right , it's worth a shot to reset the ECU. I'm usually the person who'll be positive and pray it's a simple fixable fault, but having been down this road before with 300's and 200's my instinct is telling me the worst here. i'll disconnect the battery tonight, who knows? :D

Could it not be a faulty speed sensor in the box rather than a clutch. If a clutch goes then it will try and select then slip its nuts off.

That's the thing, box has to be dropped , opened and repaired and put back in. I don't happen to know any decent mechanics who'll do this for a reasonable price. Labour alone would be 1k euros

Same thing happened to mine. I went for the manual conversion. Would I do it again? Probably not.

Yikes...I see where you are coming from with that. Yer caught between the devil and the deep blue see......costa lot to fix and loose a lot to sell......either way loosing money. I work on auto boxes on the commercials but sorry to say I dont have a scooby with cars but it does sound electrical to me rather than terminal but I might (and probably will be) wrong.

Sorry to Hi-Jack....

Mine appears to do similar to yours, or somthing odd anywa first and second are fine (lock up working fine on 2nd) the change into 3rd is a little different. Either creeping about or really flying it seems to change and hover out of gear for a moment or two and then drop into it. Like a slow gear change. I just assumed this was normal but it would appear not. Is this my 'box failing as well? Or nothing to really worry about Overdrive is fine, as is lockup on both 3rd and overdrive....

Thanks!

yup, mines been like that since i owned it, just got used to it. It's a common thing seen it posted here few times before. 2nd to third just lazy

ah okay then.... not expecting immenent failure then... its on its second auto box already, only done 12k on this one....

ZXRACER had a 'recon' box with receipts for sale on here CHEAP, the only problem is he is down south, Crewekern to be precise but it was very cheap, so cheap in fact that I might convert mine from manual to auto just to get a bargain !

Exactly the same as mine, overheated and fooked box. Just didnt get that oil cooler fitted in time before it went !!

Decided i prefered the auto so shelled out £1600 for a new box.

Andy Z usually has some good second hand boxs, got mine from him last year works great. one of my clutches went, a lot cheaper to replace than rebuild.

Thanks for the advice folks but i just don't see the point in forking out big labour costs to replace a 16 year old autobox with another old autobox. I spent 1500 on my last z doing the very same thing and after 12 months it started acting up again. Manual convertion is the only way to go, and a better investment in my opinion.

A&M transmissions did mine for €1100 3 years ago in Dublin

Same problem as you

Gearbox is fried.

Mines on the way out again though after doing about 15k

Would reccomment new box or manual conversion
