Dont do it TBH, buy the tdi which has more punch to it and can do 50-60mpg all day long! but the V5 sounds amazing on full tilt :D The difference is that a V5 is a 2.3na and the GTi is a 1.8 with a turbo. My fan just stopped working and my climate control is playing up so got a bill of nearly 2k, not cheap when something big goes wrong. spongey
My only advice is to test drive a TDi and make sure its the 150bhp one and you will see the difference in mpg just on the test drive alone  You only buy the V5 for the noise and 5th gear torque, sit at 70 on the motorway and plant your foot and it pulls like a horse all day long. Very comfy but then thats any mk4 TBH. If you do go for a V5 make sure you get all the toys, climate, cruise and if you can get the cream leather as iirc its heated :) If you need anything else give us a shout. Also advise reading the mk4 forums and read up on comman faults and make sure they have been done. Theres no cambelt as its a chain so thats a good point. spongey
Your welcome :) Nice to try and give something back. Final thing is that they are untunable without spending huge amounts as only 70yr olds bought them  so make sure you get the 170bhp not the 150bhp earlier model. AMD in bicester are the best tuning company around for mucking around with the V5s but it really costs. Heres the forum, and good luck. http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/default.aspx
