The ECU I had was permanently damaged unfortunately. If your hasn't got wet though then it might not be your problem. Best bet is to try another known good ecu in your car and see if it then behaves...

i am west london Andy P but dont mind jumping on the tube over to you to pick it up and drop it back to you.

Auto ECU (UK or Jap) will work in any car :) Only one that won't work is an NA one due to different injector sizes :)

It would probably be easier if I posted it to you tomorrow morning, you could have it by Thursday morning.

I have one more question. Am i likely to do any damage to my car even when running with the test ECU with the symptoms I have described? And how do i fit the new ECU? Is there a guide somewhere?

Passenger side footwell. Pull up al the carpet, there should be a wooden board there, unscrew that and you'll see the ECU. It's the one with the big plug which should be coloured blue. Unscrew that and replace with new ECU.

Is it as plug and play as that? just pull out the connector(s?), plug in the new one and screw it down?

Not forgetting the 10mm bolt in the centre of the connector ;) When refitting the connector make sure it sits squarely - few turns on the bolt, push edges of connector in, few more turns, push again.. etc :) Don't overtighten the bolt either or it will put the connector out of square :)

Might be worth disconnecting the battery while you do it just to be safe ;)
