Bit of a problem: urgently need to send several large files to someone (just over 50Mb all together), but the limit on my email account is 20Mb so was going to put them in a .rar file. However, probably because I'm a bit of a Luddite, although I've got them into a .rar file, they don't seem to have compressed at all, in fact they appear to be the same size as before. Same thing is happening when I use WinZip. Am I missing something obvious? Do I need to alter the ratio's or something? If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it!

Cheers,

Leigh.

in winrar

right mouse click on the file m8

add to archive, THEN advanced and the compression details will come up;)

forgot to say otherwise the file does stay the same size

Why not open a yahoo email account, its free and you have a 1gig limit.

That's not the size of message you can send though.

A lot of ISP's won't let you send files over 10 or 20MB.

Leigh,

Depends what type of files you are trying to compress.

Some files are already compressed eg. .JPG images and videos etc so a compression program like WinZip can't really do anything more with it.

Before, I've right clicked on the original file and gone to "Add to Archive", typed in the name I want for the .rar file, checked archive format as "RAR" and checked "Best" Compression method. If I click on Advanced, a window comes up that has a box marked "Compression" and when I check that a very big and scary window comes up with lots of options I haven't a clue about, lol! ;) I'm sending photos over so I'm thinking the "True Colour Compression" section is the most appropriate, but it's split into "Auto", "Force" or "Disable", then a dropdown box of Dictionary sizes...not sure what to do now TBH!

Chris, cheers for that mate, think you might've hit the nail on the head there. Being Jpeg photographic images, maybe that's what's making it go t1ts up, if there's already compression being used? If so...bugger. :(

BIGSSS: Like Chris says, most ISP's have a file send limitation. Plus, I don't know what storage limitations he has on his own account. If it's very limited, sending them all may be too much for his account and they'll just get sent straight back. Ideally wanted to compress them to make absolutely sure they got through.

Yes if its images you won't get much (if any) compression.

Image files like .BMP are hardly compressed so the files might be 3 or 4MB in size but when you save them as .JPG they are heavily compressed down to a few hundred K.

WinZip or WinRAR can't compress it any more :(

All you can do is send them 2 or 3 at a time LOL

sorry didnt realise it was photos m8 BUT you can still compress further

ie select all files, then create archive then select solid archive, in most case it will half the size again;)

if its still to big do it in 2 parts as above

Cheers for that, will have a go now! :D Any reduction in quality using this method though? Just want to check as they're for a hair/fashion mag and the guy contacted me today saying the deadline has been moved forward to tomorrow, hence much tearing of hair out to get them ready and it put the kybosh on my usual method of burning them to disc and posting!

very little m8

again depends on what pixels etc you have used to start with?

otherwise as above mate maybe send them a few at a time, IF your in contact with him, as he receives them he could save and delete the email

to make room for the next lot, that way not taking up his usage

or if you know him? maybe set up msn and attach the files

sorry just realised its YOU that has the usage restriction on your emails m8

shouldnt stop you sending a few at a time though should it?

easy way around this, split the archives, there is an option in winrar right underneath the compression type, put in the size you want each section to be in bytes, send them all, then the recipient will be able to open up any 1 of the sections and extract the full file, so long as they have all the sections of course.
